Putting engine in myself. questions.
Tuesday, March 28, 2006 6:09 PM
Friday night my grandfather, dad, and I are going to start putting in a new engine.

So far how we plan on doing it is raising the body and rolling everything out from under the front. Is this the right way to do this or is there an easier way. Also whats the easiest way to lift the body unless theres an easier way to do it. And pretty much any other problems i might run into.
Its a 02 ld9 and were putting it into a 99z

I personaly think its better faster and easyest if you lift the engine from the top with tranny and all. i just removed the brake cluster Upper/lower engine mounts and the tranny mount and disconnected all the wiring of course and out it came with ease .. but alot of other people here like to take it out of the bottom like you are trying to do. its just your choice ... life the car with the jack stands engough were you can slide the engine to the side or clear it . and just basically the same process but now your using a jack with a piece of wood to bring it down slowly. as you know. but good luck ohh and what are you planning to do with the old LD9 ?

Im keeping the old engine and probably rebuilding it. If not then i will let you know. I didnt know if you could take it all out from the top. i think we might do it that way im just not sure yet i still have a few days to plan everything out.
Any other advice on which way is easier to do yourself.

thanks

i have done motors on auto's and manuals. I've found that the manual is a few inchs wider than the auto tranny so it wont come all out the top with ease. the auto will come out easy out the top in one piece. wit the manual i seperated the motor and tranny in the car and dropped the tranny out the bottom and motor out the top....this was a fairly easy procedure

So is pulling the engine out of the top after you take the transmission out of the bottom the easiest way?

I dropped mine out the bottom.
Engine, tranny, axels, wheels, struts... everything
I thought it was pretty easy.

I seperated the motor and tranny then lefted the engine until it was about to pull out of the tranny then i put a jack under the tranny to support it then the motor alone will come out and the tranny will stay supported right where you left it. My dad works at GM dealership he said thats how all the techs do it.

Thats the way it said to do it in the chilton book. How do you raise the body high enough to bring all that out from the bottom though?

when me and my buddies did his teg we had the car jacked up as high as possible and when the engine was out and down as car as it could be 4 of us lifted the front end and slid the motor out quick.....i wouldnt recommend that way though.

Remove almost all bolts holding engine in includine all the hoses and such.
Attach cherry picker and raise until it is basically supporting the weight of the engine.
Jack front of car up.
Remove rest of bolts and drop engine to the ground with cherry picker.
Pull engine out from underneath by pulling on ground.

I'm pretty sure thats how we did mine. Reminder, my front cross brace was cut off so it was probably a little easier for me but it should work the same.

I think im just going to take it all out from the bottom. We should have all the equipment to lift the car high enough and that was my main concern. I'll post again once we finish or if i have any problems.
