Do you mean what motors you can swap in that are already j-body motors or non j-body motors?

I'm assuming you have the 2.2 OHV motor, so here are your options:

2.4 Twin Cam Motor (LD9) - I would suggest getting a 2000+ so you can get the Getrag Transmission as well. Isuzu trannies = Tha poo

2.2 ECOTEC (L61) - 2002 ECOs have a different fuel system than the 2003+, just something you might want to keep your eye out for. I believe for your 99 you would also have to upgrade your electrical system.

2.3 Motor (Quad 4) - Easiest thing you can do is find one out of a 1995 J-body but I'm not sure if you'd have to convert over to OBDII...I believe that year it was transmission specific depending that determined what computer you had. I'm sure if you search you'll find more info on it.

3400 V6 Motor - These are found in the 2nd Gens...once again, biggest issue you'll probably find is you'll have to convert to a OBDI computer but it will fit in your engine bay.

as far as non-jbody related motors....

3800 V6 Motor with or without the Supercharger - It's been done. You can either get just the motor from a Bonneville for example or you can get the Supercharged Motor say from a Monte Carlo or Grand Prix. Tight squeeze but it fits. Alot of customization though.

With all these motor swaps, you'll need the transmission as well, you wouldn't be able to use your OHVs transmission (of course, I'm assuming you have an OHV...your profile isn't filled out).

Here are some threads that'll help you with information on the swaps:

2.2 swap for 2.4

2.2 ohv for 2.3 ho engine swap

John and Luke, I hope this helps you both out. These are all motors that you could go to that would give you a decent amount of power over what you guys have right now. Good luck. Anymore questions, just ask.

The 2.2-2.4 swap link, I read that how-to, and it was for a 2.2 with automatic. And it mentioned remocing the dash?? Is that jsut when doing a manual and 2.4 or is that on any swap? I have a 2.2 and would like to do the swap but I haven't tried because I don't know. I already knew I'd need the mounts, harness, all the 2.4 specific parts. So if I already have a manual, I don't need the clutch linkages and shifter linkage or the master cylinder, right? Isn't that all the same between an RS and Z24?

NHJK, the 3400 never came in the J-platform, and the LN2 tranny should bolt up to it IIRC

To the guys looking to swap: do you really think you'll be happy with a stock LD9 (nobody here who has them in there cars is after all)? You're going to have to put money into that engine as well. Maybe think about turboing your 2200 instead. On the stock internals and a good tune, you'd be able to make more hp than you could put to the ground on street tires.
If you are completely ignorant, or just want to swap to say 'hey, I swapped out the engine like all the honda guys do', go with the ECO. They are getting HUGE returns on their boost.

I'm so sorry....I meant the 3100, the ones found in the 2nd Gen Z24s

Are you trying to get a 2.4 from 2000+ or 96-99?

I'm going to say 96-99. Or rather 97-99 because I want to run the HP software when it's released and 96 won't be supported right away. And I don't want to have to deal with the BCM or whatever it is and also the fuel system I understand is also different.

I don't understand why they wouldn't support the 96 2.4s...you sure they don't mean the 95 Z24s (which were the 2.3 motors)?

The 96 ECUs were configured different than the 97+. They have a chip or something. I believe you can take a 96 engine and just plug a 97 ECU in with no problems though, so not really a nig deal.

In your opinion. But I want to know about swapping an LD9. It's simpler to install in a '97 from what I understand, and cheaper to get one, at least around where I am it is.
The power output between an LD9 or an Ecotec, to me, isn't worth the extra costs. I found several LD9s for $500-$800 complete with tranny, harness, everything I need, where an Ecotec motor alone will cost that or more. Again, these are prices in my area.
