help me choose a magnaflow muffler please

I have a 2004 cavalier, 2.2 ecotec, aftermarket intake, everything else is pretty much stock.

I went on magnaflow's website, and they have so many different mufflers to choose from... from the street series to the race series, etc.

To help limit my selection down, I tried going with a polished finish, round-canister style, 2.25" inlet ... but there are still many mufflers to choose from.

I really like the look of the muffler that comes with the pre-built magnaflow cat-back exhaust system (which is over $600), so that's the LOOK i want, and I also want a nice sound too. Which model muffler is that?

Thanks for any help reducing my selection and helping pick out the perfect muffler!

You say you want a round-canister muffler, but you like the look of the muffler that comes with the full cat-back. So do you want round or oval? My suggestion would be the 5x8x14 oval muffler 14829. Heres a pic of it...

thanks for the suggestion, that's a very pretty muffler. Do all the different mufflers have different sounds? or do they just have different looks?

here's the muffler I was talking about in the magnaflow catback:

^^^Thats not the muffler that come with the cat-back system. The cat-back system comes with an oval muffler that is similar to the one in the pictuer I posted. THe cat-back system that you pitured is actually for the Scion XB. Alot of times the pictures that a company posts is just a general picture, and not specific to the application. The oval mufflers pretty much sound all the same, and the round mufflers pretty much sound all the same.

It's personal preference. An oval one typically has more volume, hence sound absorbing material inside of it, so it's most likely going to be quieter than an equivalent length round can. The longer the muffler, the quieter the sound, however I dont think they make polished ones longer than 14".

Basically all you have to choose from is the different diameter and what tip is on it if youre set with the round with tip.

Hey Dave, thanks so much for your help!

Does the diameter of the muffler change the way it sounds, or performance in any way? or is it just looks?

is there a "most commonly used" one?

I guess I'll have to sleep on it a little longer.

get the 5x8x18 with out a tip then add your own tip

the 1's with the tip have a larger outlet , and it doesnt help with sound

mine is the 14" and i hate it , friend of mine has the 18" and it should better

If you are going to get one of the 5x8 14" street series ones make sure you get a resonator. I have a 25" resonator with mine right now and its still a bit raspy. I plan on putting on a second resonator soon though, probably a 12" right behind the muffler. If that doesn't clear up the rasp I might have to get one of those XL 18" models.
