My buddy from the speed said he could get his hands on a cobolt ss motor (supercharged) for $3500 straight from Gm. Do you think that would be a good swap instead of the ecotech or z24.
well..now that you have a price on the engine...how much can he get you the transmission for..and the pcm..and the wiring..for the whole car...
this has been discussed before..and to sum up,for the amount of work and money it would take to do this you could build and boost your current engine for less money and probably make more power.
$3500 is for tranny, harness, mounts everything , like i said he works in a speed shop and gets mad discounts and the work and money will pay off with the rarity of the car, NOBODY HAS THAT!!!!
its alot easier to swap in the 2.2 eco and put the s/c on it
the 2.0 clutch is alot different and wont work with the 2.2 trans , which you have to use the cavalier 2.2 eco trans in the car
yea...were talking about differnt mounts..differnt electronics..your gonna need more than just the pcm and wiring to do this...hell..even the throttle body on the motor is electronic(no cable) ...we realize you wanna be the only person with this engine in your car..but after all it takes to make it work, and you DO get it done, people are gonna look at it and say "wow, you did it...but whyyy???"
i mean for the amount of money and work your talking about "most of us" dont see it as worth it....for instance...your talking about 3500 for the engine tranny etc. ....it just spent that much on an engine build and ill have tons more power than that engine and im still N/A..HELL, i can out run that car as it is with my quad...so what makes it so special??
Take the couple grand and invest in either A: an easier swap or B: boost
I know its just an opinion and you dont have to follow it ,but itll save you money and youll get just as much power for your buck...if not more...but i wish you good luck either way
id say its easier to swap in a 2.4 since they came in J's in 01. then probaly the 2.2 ecotec. the Cobalt SS motor could give you more headaches then you want

Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!
Bah, do it! Screw the nay-sayers.
But don't buy a new crate motor... you need too much other stuff. Buy a wrecked SS that's been hit in the side or back. Then swap EVERYTHING over. You'll need everything... all the body wiring, PCM, body controls, engine harness, fuse panels, airbags, etc.
ive got the 2.0 LSJ motor and trans sitting in my garage
the trans will not fit in the j-body chassis , the required work to make it fit , you might as well do a rwd set up from the solstice
the 2.0 is also drive by wire , so to use anything from the cobalt/ion your gonna have to do ALOT OF wiring and modifing , plus now one knows how much of thier electronics is interchangable with ours
and a friend of mine tried to use the 2.0 motor in his sunfire , and could find any combonation of clutch stuff to make it all work , so he ditched the 2.0 crank and went back to the 2.2
the 2.0 uses a 8 bolt flywheel and the 2.2 uses a 6 bolt
so i do know what im talking about
if the 2.0 is what your set on...go buy the sc cobalt...other wise, J engines or boost are your best routes

Bingo!

I made a thread on j-body.com asking how hard to swap a 2.4L VVT. they said its a @!#$load of work. get an LD9 and supercharge that bitch.
Working on obtainting an M-Class license... ?? Hint: 2 wheels.

I'm with lenko. I did the first 2k z24 swap into a 95 ob1 chassis and it was worth it. Strip the car of EVERYTHING.. i do mean everything for 1500 bones. Rewired my car.. rewired EVERYTHING! Welded in new tranny mounts and voila it worked. BUT, had a set of 2k+ manuals and a fair amount of stress not knowing if it would work or did i just waste my money and basically strap a car, my only car. And 4 months of down time.
So if you know enough you could do it. But its not simple.

It would be alot of work... but I say go for it. You'd be the only person with a 2.0L supercharged motor in a jbody. Do it, and post lots of progress pics! I want to see it.
well i got these people at this performance that are gonna help me drop it in the only work that has to be done is performance clutch, flywheel, pressure plate for a cobalt, all the rest like splicing up the harness into my other harness and machining the mounts all the hardest part. But i will post a Sh!t TON! of pictures
I dunno about all you other guys but i kinda like having more displacement than a bottle of coke
Whats up people?

true, id rahter have 205 hp as oppused to 150

Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!
as i said before the 2.0 clutch wont work with the cav trans , and the coblat trans wont work in the cav , its to big
the 2.0 will physiclly fit in place of the 2.2 eco in a j-body , and bolt in no problem
you just gotta find a custom clutch set up to work , figure out what to do for power steering since the 2.0 head isnt set up for power steering
gotta figure out how to drivce by wire as the cobalts dont have a throttle cable
plus the you wont have the power you would with the bigger motor , even though its .2 larger , lol
the money it would cost , and the excess time spent to try to make it work isnt worth the end result , the 2.0 just isnt worth it
and this is coming from me and im going to be doing a rwd cavalier with a 4cyl , atleast ill have done it for the better , and ill either be using a 2.4tc or a 2.4 eco , i wouldnt even consider the 2.0 and ive got 1 in my garage
hell i wouldnt even consider swaping the 2.2 eco in my g/fs cav for the 2.0 , ill rob the good parts from the 2.0 to use in hers , the block with the oil cooler , the rods , larger capicity oil pan , will get used
the 2.0 crank will get tossed in the trash , the 2.0 head has to much value for other people so itll sit around
putting the 2.0 in is liek taking the LS1 motor out of a camaro , and putting the 3.4 V6 in its place , LOL

YOu can say what you want but half these guys wanna see it and i dont do half a$$ SH!t
so it will be done right and you'll regret it when you see it in sport compact car or modified mag.

yea..at the back under the "why the hell did he do it?" section
ok honestly dude..just tell us the real reason your wanna do this swap....just tell us its for the prestige and fame or maybe just for show and NOT for power and well let it go and eagerly await the outcome.
You sir.
Are a toolbag.
He's trying to help you, making valid reasons as to why it won't work, how much work you can expect to have in store.
For all the money and work that will go swapping the engine in... for that kind of gain? It's been said over and over, it's really not worth it.
in fact, give me the money, I'll make better use of it.
He'll regret it you say? After you do everything right you say?
God, I hope you @!#$ up. Hell. I hope you don't even get started.
No... I hope you start and @!#$ both engines up doing it.
Go, move it. get on this project I can't wait to see it all finished up.
what are you waiting for?
for the amount of work AND money hes looking at....would i be wrong to assume he could PROBABLY have gone with the 3800 swap and came out ahead??
i think it might be close , depending how much you get the 3800s/c motor for
if he wants to waste money and not listen , oh well
thats what he gets for being a newbie
guess no one told him to respect his elders
LOL
