Advice please?!!!?

Hey guys,

I've been a member here for a while but I don't post much....just read people's posts and others btich about them....lol I am finally finished school and working full time. I can now afford to slowly start putting some money into my cavalier. I would like to increase the performance a little.

Do you guys have any advice as to what modifications will give me the most bang for the buck. Here are a list of my current modifications pasted from my car domain site. A few pictures can be found there. Tell me what you think so far.

nitrous will give you your best bang for the buck. But you could also get a TB.

Well it seems like you've done a good deal of bolt ons but if I were you, instead of just keep buying inexpensive parts to add to your modifications list, think about how much farther you want to go with your car as far as money invested and how much more power you want to get out of your car.

If you decide that you want to just get a few more horses, keep doing what you're doing. If you decide that you want alot more power, save your money for boost.

put a down payment on an 05 WRX....?

Unless there is an end to your means. Mine is completly autocross directed so I went header, and I'm looking at replacing my suspension with Tein Super Streets, and hopefully and LSD before I jump into DSP.

OR I'll buy myself an 07 cooper S when they release the turbo model and just run around in Stock class with some DA Koni's

Looks like you're about to max out the bolt on options. If I were in your position, I'd ask myself what I want, wether I want a ton more power, or if I'm gonna be reasonably happy with a little more. The secret cam swap seems to be a really popular choice, and at that point I would do the TB too to let that engine breathe as much as possible. ECU tuning is not easy with these cars as we all know, but an APEX'i SAFC would let you have a little more control. And there's always the bottle or the hair dryer, whichever pulls your trigger. I'm more of a boost man myself, but nitrous is good for the occasional track day beat down. I also noticed you're using 2" drop springs but no mention of struts and shocks. I'd recommend investing in some Koni or Tokiko products to make things safe. Also a brake upgrade would be good. Nothing crazy, stainless lines, slotted rotors and some ceramic pads should do nicely.

I had thought about the TB, but I have a few questions......

Is there much gain to be had with a larger TB but with the stock intake manifold. I don't know, but it seems as though opening up the TB and leaving the manifold stock would be kind of a waste. Would you have to do the manifold too?

And right now, the only place I know of that sells TB's is RSM and from looking around here, I kind of get the impression that they aren't the most reputable company.....I don't know for sure though. Are the other companies offering a larger TB.

I am also aware of the 2.3 manifold and TB. I have been looking for a 2.3 HO but they are pretty rare around here. Then there's my EGR valve and the problems associated with removing/bypassing it and I'm not really sure I wanna get into that right now.

For now, I am kinda just looking for some more bolt on parts that can help me pull away from the new civic SIR's......hehehe

NO2 could also be an option to me but that adding nitrous has always been a concearn for engine durability. I do not want to get too far into the engine for now. If I put a small shot of nitrous (50 or 75) on my car with a wet kit and don't use it too much, will I still run into engine trouble? I plan on buying a motorcycle in the spring and I know that it's damn hard to make a cavalier as fast as my new bike will be. A STOCK Yamaha R1 runs 9's in the quarter mile.

Thanks for all your help and keep the advice coming,

Trevor

Engine problems associated with nitrous are sort of a crap shoot. Mileage on the motor, condition of internal parts and seals, the nitrous setup, engine tune, it can all make a difference for better or worse and I can't honestly tell you you'll be fine nor can I tell you you're screwed.

As far as the TB and manifold, yeah, you might as well replace the maniflod too, because the whole idea is to get more air in, but again, it's a crap shoot. Some complain that the power band is shifted higher. And it is, because you're slowing down air velocity. But in racing applications, the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. Especially if you plan on boosting, because that turbo will cram all the air the intake will handle. Take my Laser for instance. I replaced the stock intake and TB with a sheetmetal intake and a HUGE throttlebody. Not great for street driving, but I'm also running over 20psi of boost and I don't care about streetability, because it's all about the 1/4 mile for me. But there are other dealers that sell these parts for the LD9 besides RSM. I know Venom makes a really nice manifold for the 2.4 though they're not cheap, and places like BBK and other mainstream tuning companies probably have a TB for these cars, but I'm not certain.

There's also cam gears from places like AEM that are good to use for tuning because you can adjust cam timing. Very good for getting the most out of what you have.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

what about http://www.jbodyperformance.com i know they sell the TB and manifold together for like 340 bucks i dont know how good their products are but i know they have both pieces bored out to 60mm or 62mm whichever you perfer.

on a 2.4 the opening on the intake manifold is roughy 59 mm. so boring your tb out to 59mm would be good. no bottle neck as far as airflow is concerned. and there is really nothing you can with the stock intake manifold
