motor mounts
Thursday, February 02, 2006 2:08 PM
I am going to change out my upper and lower motor mounts on my 2001 chevy z24 I am pretty sure that I am going with the RKsport unless anyone advise otherwise. However I just realized that the upper mount needs to be in good condition to add the insert any suggestions where to buy a new mount?>

Thanks

Carcustoms.net upper and lower mounts. Same as RKSport, but cheaper. Don't worry too much about the condition of upper mount. Just make sure the upper mount insert fits in snug... like it should be REAL snug no matter what. Both are great items.

Yep I just did mine this past weekend, it was very easy to do took about 1 hr to 1.5 hr the only bad part was the service monkeys had cross threaded one of my lug nuts which broke off when I took my wheel off to do the lower mount. Also the instruction sheet I saw said to unbolt the inner fender panel to access the bolts for the lower mount, but I just took a sharp hobby knife and cut the panel enough to get my 15mm deep socket onto the bolts and remove them. The car seems tighter after doing the mounts, subframe brace and front/rear strut braces.

2000 Z24 5spd header & catback for now.

Not only did I not have to take off the fender well, I didn't even have to take the wheel off. Just lifted up the front and supported it with jacks, then used a floor jack w/ a flat piece of wood and took some of the stress off the engine when the lower mount was out. It was just totally unnecessary to take off fender well or wheel. Plently of room.

If you find any motor mounts for our cars, they are all made by Prothane, so they are the same, you're just paying for the company name.

Alright Adam, I shall explain this one out.

Upper Mount Insert, yes Prothane does make them, they make them in two different colors, one would be red and the other one would be black. From my understanding the only two companies who even buy them in red are RSM and Mantapart. Something, however, its been known that Race Tech carries them in black as well. For the most part, people just go with the color red.

Lower Mount, Prothane makes it, however, a few other companies make them as well. RSM has one out which is made of billet, RKSport gets their own made from a different company who is local to them. So the Lower mount you buy from RKSport is not the same as the one from Prothane. Completely different even though they may look the same, different company makes it for RKS. As for the billet one from RSM, I have seen it in person once, never used it nor do I know of anyone who has it to give it a review.

Ecotec Upper Mount. Prothane DOES NOT make this piece. Prothane DOES make the actual bushing but they do not make the metal unit. There is a company that RKSport sources out the from which they get the urethane bushing from Prothane and put it together. Also, the company who makes it for RKSport, they have a contract with RKS saying they will ONLY make it for RKS. Oh yeah, the manufacture of the Ecotec upper mount also, sends the mount out to get it powder coated by a different company.

------------

Back in the days, say back in 2001, 2002 Energy Suspension used to also make the Upper Mount Insert for RKSport, heck, they even had RKS logo on he side of the mount. Once Energy raised prices people went to different places to get mounts made at.

As for Mark Pain Lower Mounts, back in the day when he used to make the mounts he would have a Canadian company make the yellow bushings for him and he would press the old RKS bushings out and get them installed in the same dog bone. After a while, Mark wanted to actually get his own complete lower mount made up in Canada but it was going to take a lot of money up front to do so and the return did not look so great. Then he got married and now he does not do any of that stuff anymore.

-------------

Anywho, hope all this clears things up as far as motor mounts go. If you want me to explain control arm bushings, transmission mounts let me know.

PS: Not posting any of this to ow3n anyone. Just giving out info .

Thank You Karo. Like you said, most of them look the same so it's easy to assume that they were all made by Prothane. I did know about the upper ECOTEC mount not being made by Prothane, my comment was refering to the non-ECOTEC people. I remember the Mark Pain ones but haven't seen them in a long long time.

Thanks for the info though and I'll remember this in the future. I'm not afraid to admit I was wrong or be shown that I was wrong, I learn from my mistakes. Peace.
