do you have the # for the code its throwing?? I was told that my catback system was causing the CEL I was getting but it was the post cat O2 sensor. replaced the sensor and all is well. *note post cat O2 sensor does not change how the car runs.

if you get the actual #/ code i think we can help you out more, you symptoms sound to me like you need a pre cat O2 sensor, about $25 at autozone and easy install
good luck

advance auto (in my area at least) will hook a scan tool up to it for free.

get that done and tell me what the scan tool is spitting out, we can work from there

p0420 is the code i was getting the important part of that definition is "bank 1 sensor 2" it is a $100 sensor. my sensor was shorted to batt+ so instead of varying between0-1volt it was showing around 12V all the time hence the CEL. my advice is if you dont have a tool take the car to a local garage and see if they will hook up a snap on scan tool and get the readout from that sensor. if its 0 or +12V it is definately a bad sensor.

i am pretty sure mine was shorted out while a shop was doing exxaust work on my car, so that may very well be what happened to you...
good luck and feel free to ask any other questions

but if the O2 sensor is showing a voltage between 0.1 and 0.9 and constantly changing then it is a problem that the aftermarket Cat is flowing too much, if you read around there are tricks online to get around the CEL (simulator, resistor inline w/ O2 sensor) but in NY anyway your car will not pass emmisions inspection so better get it fixed

both O2 sensors on our cars are considered "bank one", (bank two is on a car with two exhaust manifolds most of the time ex. cars with V6 or a V8). but you need to know sensor #2 also known as downstream, or POST CAT. if you look under your car it is in the exhaust pipe basicly under the drivers seat. it has about a 3 foot wire extention that goes up under the hood to a plug that is located near the firewall on the drivers side. you could most likely test this yourself with a multimeter if you find a diagram of the wires and poke around a bit. where abouts in CT are you i have a meter that would tell you real quick what the problem is, i live not far from danbury CT

if you dont get it figured out soon hit me up on aim later in the week maybe we could meet somewhere and get it figured out for ya. im at work now i work crazy hrs 12h overnights) but im off from wen-sun this week . my AIM SN is nyfiref1ghter .. also you may still have another problem lingering there somewhere cause the post cat O2 sensor does not change you engine performance, or fuel milage.. all it does is tell you if your cat is working properly or not.

either way let me know how you make out i gotta go pretend to do some work
later
