Okay i have another question that's been running through my mind regarding cold air intakes.. does it really matter which one you buy as long as it fits? when i was shopping around i saw anything from $250 AEM's to $25 ebay happy hong kong brands. It's all tubing, but some of it looks fancier, it seems. I decided to take the middle road and buy the cheapo "#1 NUMBER ONE" intake off nopi. For $120 the quality suprised me. I figured if the filter was crap, i could just replace it later.
Only one problem.. can't fit the IAT fully into the teeny rubber-grommeted hole they provided. Noticeable performance gain.. haven't thrown any codes yet, but this worries me. Anyone else suffered this problem.. or should i just quit whining and hunt down the hardware stores for a larger grommet and drill the hole a bit bigger? perhaps cheap intakes are a bad idea..

Sadly, no more..
YOu are mosly paying for Name brand when buying AEM and Injen Stuff.
A simple $50 Bomz intake is a very good choice too.
It your case, remove the rubber grommet and see if your IAT sits there, if its too loose, take a strip of electrical tape and wrap the side of the sensor till it fits snuggly.
Cheap intakes are usually the best way to go. Since an intake is an intake is an intake, regardless of who makes it.
Look at mine for instance.
why?
why?
why?
INTAKES ARE METAL TUBES WITH A FILTER
if the gromet hole is to small make it bigger. Im pissied becuase I hate to see people get ripped off by compaines that chagre any more than 30 dollars for an intake. have you ever read there arguments for why there so expeniseve
"yeah basicly our intakes are wind tested and manufactured to perfection to get you tht extra HP"
BULLSHIIT
IF there esppically bent how come they all have to be angel the same way?
and whats more they say that they give more HP then the cheap ebay ones. you know what I bet they do...about 2 hp if that. is 180 worth 2 HP? if so then by all means.
also whats even better if you read some of the reviews on compines like weapon R they have metal crap in the angels that people have had to dremel out.
and the final argument why do people still push the expensive tube crap?
easy becuase they bought the stupid tube crap. I will gurantee that at least 90% of people who say its worth it have bought the expensive crap and are trying to prove that they havent wasted there money. guess what they did.
there is no good argument out there for expensive intakes other then CARB approved or warrinted.(if you need a warrtien on a metal tube kill yourself) other then that its all garbage.
I would post this for every intake Q if I had the time. oh and just to prove that this is a postive post
I HAVE MODIFED A 2.4 INTAKE THAT I BOUGHT FOR 20$ CONTACT ME FOR INSTRUCTIONS
finial thought is if you spend more then 40 dollars on an intake you have been ripped off period.

Yea it kinda makes you wonder why all these companies waist all this time and money doing research and development when they could of just bought some plasic tubes from pep boys and made an awesome performing intake.
Cheap performance...go ahead if ya want. Some people like quality.
If you know how to make your own or modify an intake to fit, fine. If you don't know how, I would spend the money on an intake that:
1. Fits correctly
2. Has a quality filter
3. Has a hole for the IAT sensor

i had a Bomz intake for about 5,000 miles. worked fine...til the weld that hold its to the motor snapped and the intake started flopping around. i've now had an AEM intake on my car for around 30,000 miles with no problems.
GO PATS!!!
I bought an Injen intake, drove around for a while, and there was a definite performance increase over the stock intake. Then I put the stock intake tube on without the factory airbox, shoved a piece of 3" exhaust pipe in the end of the tube, mounted a cone K&N filter, and drove around with that to see if there's a noticeable difference between that and the Injen intake. I've since then sold my Injen intake.

I figured it'd get to somebody eventually. I had a different sig that was in German like my name is and I got a lot of Q's about what it said.

here a tip. the rubber grommet under your battery that is attached to the stock intake box, it is the exact size for a 5/8 hole for your iat sensor.
With AEM and Injen and K&N yes you are paying for name...........
BUT you are also paying for quality, with these brans the intake will fit right, the first time, no mods needed. Also they will last. IF you want something a littel less expensive get rksport, weapon r, those brands are not as expensive but still have great quality. They fit right also.

Good question!
Remind me why having a plastic intake is bad like ICEMAN and spectra, Or like the stock IM on the car. After all, plastic stays cooler, and the same pieces are used on a huge variaty of applications including turbocharger pipes and vette intakes.
btw, what motor do you have?
I dunno about the 2.3/4's and the eco's but on the 2200, that big plastic hoop-a-joop that says 2200 on it, if you look inside of it you will see the the cross section is rather huge for a 115hp motor. that and it has a much smoother flowpath for the air than a 90* bend of pipe. so all you really need on that motor is a piece of ipe the size of the opening to the hoop-a-joop and and air cleaner and a ait sensor port. I plan on fabbing my own just haven't gotten to it yet
usually most intakes that are expensive are because of CARB approval, if you live in cali for instance, good luck passing inspection with a 30 dollar intake or a homemade one, your stuck with injen, K&N and AEM.
im glad i live in PA

I hate to say it but that is one of 1,759,265,936 reasons why I would never move to cali
No kidding. Move to Iowa or Missouri or something. They don't really care what you do here as long as it isn't illegal by Federal standards. Besides, how could a tube possibly not meet emissions? I don't understand that way of thinking at all. And if there IS logic behind it, great, but why does someone outside of California have to pay extra to have a CARB legal product? Seriously. If you live in Cali, please forgive me for that way of thinking, but ya'll got some messed up laws.

what if you take a AEM intake and hack it into something different? haha
well you have to understand, at one time there wasnt cheap ebay intakes. The reason being is the name brand companies came out with the products and charged whatever they charged for them. Along places like bomz and so on, and took the name brand stuff, COPIED it, then sold it as there own, no R&D nothing, besides the cost of a $200 dollar intake to copy, whereas AEM or something probably spent more getting the intake to fit, CARB approved, SMOG legal and so on. Also all the name brand companys are SEMA members, so for new car owners with warranties, they have the protection of the SEMA network if a there cars warranty gets revoked for the intake.
So it depends on your options, if you dont live in Cali, dont have a car with a warranty, then go with some cheap ebay intake, if you live in cali then go with a name brand part that will give you a CARB approval #

I've bought two cheap ram ait intakes from ebay and both needed the same modifications:
One: Either you get no grommet or the one you get is two small - solution go advanced auto parts and scavange one that will work by measuring the diameter of your sensor and look for something that looks solid.
Two: The grommet I found was two big to fit in the original hole in the intakes so I bought a 3/4" metal bit and drilled it out. Then put the new grommet in and use fishtank sealer or someother sealant to make sure everything is airtight and put the sensor in.
Three: You're gonna need a 45 degree (135) 3" coupler if you've got a sunfire gt cause the coulplers you get from ebay in my experience are all 3" to 2.5" step down couplers which do not work properly and you have to tape the @!#$e` out of it! (you'll have to cut the 3" coupler down a little on the throttle body side to make it fit properly)
Total cost for intake and 3" coupler about $90. Looks and works great! Yea it takes longer and you better make sure to file everything down and clean all the metal shavings out!
My only complaint is the same as [the redneck]'s the thin aluminum brackets are very weak and you better not bend them at the weld or too much anywhere for that matter. That's what happened to the first intake bracket broke; but I've been much more careful with the bracket on my new one since now I know that they are weak.
Thanks for the feedback, especially machzel. If i can't find the grommet you're talking about, my plan is to hack apart my stock air box for it's IAT fitting & either drill the intake's hole to fit that, or use some thick electrical tape to fill in the gap afterwards. The other reason i didn't buy a cheaper intake is because yes, i live in california. And driving around with a hacked off muffler does seem to gather attention from the authorities.. ( a resonator is technically a muffling device, and i've got carb numbers for porky if he asks.. aw yeah

)

Sadly, no more..
i have an AEM intake i have had it for 4 years now... very good quality no problems at all.
i have also installed a $40 ebay intake on my friends 2.2L. when i looked at the ebay one i was amazed at the quality although the install was a lil harder and required a trip to the hardware store for longer bolts. if i had it to do again i would have just bought an ebay intake and called it a day!
and yes i have also takin the sawzall to it several times now

and it does work quite nicely on my s/c!
