how long will an uncoated header last?
Sunday, January 22, 2006 10:51 PM
Basically I want to know how long i can expect either the pacesetter armor coated header, or the weapon r/tsudo header will last me. Which one would be better? I live in spokane washington, so we do have a few months of snow. Thanks in advance.

Everyone is always on this kick about getting coated headers when really it's not that necessary. If the header is made with quality, there is no need for one. I've had my Weapon-R header for over a year and have had no problems what so ever. I believe coating is a REAL issue when you're messing with boosted applications where the exhaust temps are raised noticeably and can effect under hood temps much more.

i agree, make sure the header is of good quality. i dont know about the tsudo uncoated, but uncoated pacesetters are notorious for discoloring (if that matters to you)and turning to rust buckets within a few years, especially in wet climates where they salt the roads for the winter. i have heard very good things about the "armour coat" pacesetters though.

couldn't you, have the header powder coated with hi temp coating?

Of course you could. You could call up Jet Hot (which I highly recommend) and they would do a sterling silver coating for about $100. I'm actually waiting for my turbo manifold to come back to me this week and their customer service is very good.

This is my very first ever coated header, every other car I've ever owned has just had regular old everyday headers and they have lasted for years upon years with NO problems. Coated headers are cool but the are not necessary.

I wouldn't buy a non coated header, one for the heat issue and looks if you don't get yours coated.

Agreed.

Heat isn't really an issue honestly. I've been running non coated and the only times it effects me is when I'm idle, it goes up a couple knotches but that's only SOMETIMES. Driving, no heat issues.

And damn you, mine is pretty! lol

Thanks for the info, I was worried about the coating coming off and the mild steel rusting out in a year. I know that on the black painted pace setter headers the paint comes off and the rusting begins, I just wanted to make sure ithe armour coating doesnt do the same thing.

if you drive the car in the snow where they use road salt

if you wash the salt off after it cools down , it would help the LIFE of the header out alot

and that is why alot of them wont last

even if i had a stailess header id wash the salt off of it , stainless depending on the grade will rust , and even the highest grades will rust over time (granted its a VERY LONG time)

If heat was as big an issue as everyone tries to make it then I must ask you......What did they do BEFORE these coatings were invented? Heat reduction is how the manufacturers of these headers try and explain its worth vs. cost to purchase. First off just removeing that big clunky cast iron manifold and installing a header will drop under hood temps by itself. Further reduction where it would be great is not worth the cost IMO.
I was given my header by another org member or I would have never bought one myself due to the high cost.

the coatings actually work

regular headers will produce the same heat or more than a cast manifold

the non-caoted header will release alot more heat sooner , than a cast or coated header

its due the thinkness of the tubes vs cast manifolds thinkness , thicker meterial hold in more heat

The coating costs a little more than that Adam.

Got a quote from JetHot last fall for $175 to do a 4 cyl header.
So in the end it costs more.

So whatever header you do get if you want a coated one, get in on one what's predone right out of the box.

For any issue you think is necessary or not here my point of view:

- First if is ceramic coat it will be less hot than with regular coating( engine bay is cooler !!, cool off in min. after the car is shot off)

- Look way better when is ceramic coat than stock powder coat, overhere the cost 200$ CAN. to have it ceramic coat

Got a RkSport 4-2-1(ceramic coat)

So as for good looking that will last a long time, you should have it coat, if you do show n' shine...

Wow! Either you got ripped off or they somehow messed up and dropped my price...

For the Jet Hot 2000 Coating (which is more $ than the sterling silver coating), I got quoted $120 with the 10% discount for getting an online quote.

Headers cool faster then manifolds that is true but not to the touch in minutes trust me you can still get burned just as easy. And when I said all headers run cooler its because the cast iron holds heat and does not let it dissipate. Coating is nice but not nessacary at all.

C'mon now Adam,
You know I don't have ANY header, I never sent it in.
Don't have it like that like you MR. Turbonator.

So they never got my money.

Well, I do have the one header from fastcav.
Thanks on that

OK, I'm just about to hit the "Checkout" button on turbotechracing.com's Pacesetter header group purchase... I'm looking at $165 shipped for the black painted vs. $245 shipped for the ceramic coated. Is the common agreement that the ceramic is cool but not overly necessary as it will still be cooler than stock and just won't look as nice? Or have we decided that the ceramic coating is worth the extra $80???

Re: how long will an uncoated header last?

IMO NO its not worth the extra $80.00. Oh and good luck with the header you'll love it.

Oh damn! I didn't recognize you at first lol ! Yeah no problem man just give me a call and we'll throw it in. I already did mine so I know what to watch for. No you do know that you'll need to take it to an exhaust shop to get the cat welded to it right ? I mean you can clamp it but welding is the way to go. Either that or we put the header on and drive it up for a whole new hi-flow 2.5 inch header back system ! Thats what I have you'll love it .

Well I JUST took it to Tony's to get a 2.25" cat-back put on so I'm not trying to dump another $150 after I just bought the one I have... How much do you think they'd charge to weld it to the cat?

We'll go to Marvins hes a friend and he'll hook you up. I'll call but I'd guess around
20 - 40 bucks depending if they need to do any pipe work. I'll call them and find out.
