Hey I want to do some engine mods or even some building up and stuff But I dont have a clue other than bolt on stuff, is there anywhere to learn how to go about mod order or l best mods? I want to increase power while not reducing engine life...actually prolonging engine life. I have 146,000 miles and have done backyard mechanic work from timing chain on a 5.0L (tear apart most of the front of the motor) to breaks, fuel pumps, water pumps, cv joints all that normal maintanece stuff. I can do pretty much everything and have the tools just dont know where to start.....and I am also operating on a budget so top of the line expensive stuff is out....just modest updrading price wise. Or even how much stuff applies from the ecotec motor post sticky to the 2.4???
personally..best upgrades on a budget , i would start with an intake ofcourse..then the upper/lower engine mounts are Great and not to pricey..other than that maybe find you a HO intake and throttle body? exhaust parts start to get alittle more pricey

so you have a 2.4............ with a budget... okay ...
the mod list... in order
1. Cold Air intake
2. Motor Mounts
3. Header and full cat back exhaust system
4. Intake Manifold, larger TB and pulleys
you'll notice QUITE a difference with that stuff...
as far as one large mod...
1. Gm S/C $2200.00 around there.....
2. Hahn turbo......$3500 or so
3. N20....... $800 or so

intake, header, cat back exhuast, and a good wet kit. wait i have all that except for the catback. but it all or die.
i hate mounts cause they make your car vibrate and i hate that. manifold and tb are pointless without the power to push through it and pullies make things spin faster and therfore wear out. just my 2 cents.

first thanks guys for the advise but outside of getting the old girl to breathe easier and the pulleys I am not to interested in turbo, nitrous, or S/C. with a catback would I really see a difference? I mean If I could up the performance with bolt on stuff will it make a very noticable difference, like horsepower wise and torque???
not with just a cat back no i doubt it..if you want more power by doing your exhaust you need to do the whole exhaust..header,cat,pipe,muffler...that takes a bit of $$ but worth it in the end combined with the other mods..might want to save for it though

Like most have said Intake (can get one on ebay for about $45 shipped), throttle body (look for someone selling a used one), header (look for someone selling one used), 2.3 cams (can be done for about $225), rest of your exhaust (shop around can be done for about $100-150). Motor mounts (are cheap to start with, and you might find someone selling them used for a good price).
My biggest suggestion to you is with the miles you have it is a matter of time before your motor dies on you. I love the LD9, but just letting you know. I would think about finding a newer 2001-2002 2.4 with lower miles (25-45k) to swap in. It is a easy swap for your car. The 2000+ motors are a little faster. Good luck, just remember shop around.
I love my car to death and I know the motor is not getting any younger I know it will die someday I guess I would like to rebuild and such but over time if thats even possible. but I have thought about doing a motor swap but my concern is I take great care of my motor and dont trust other people to do the same so I kind of just thought rebuild instead of swap. it down the road a bit but this summer I plan on painting my car and doing more interior work I ideally would like to have the car for a a few more years

Well Lee, everyone responding to you are making good suggestions but I'm going to suggest you do something outside of buying parts just yet. First, have you figured out realistically how much power you want? Also, you say you're on a budget...well...what does this budget consist of? How much money can you spend in say a month for yourself? I mean, mostly everyone here is on a budget but what you have to do is save your money. If you know that you want a part that costs $1,000 but you don't have $1,000 to spend on yourself in one whole month, save up as much money as you can to reach that point and then buy it.
I've been modifying my car for about 2 years now and I've learned this lesson. If you want something, don't let money get in your way. There is always a way to come up with cash, you just have to plan it out.
With that said and when you can answer those questions, then refer back to this topic or post another thread and start getting prices for parts and getting opinions on parts.
Good luck to you and if you have anymore questions, just ask.
Also...to the JBO Honkey...

LOL What was your name before you changed it to that?

Mine is on sideways... but I still knew that.
I was a retard, and now I'm permanently banned.
secret cams. read the secret cam sticky.........that will give you an exceptionally better driving experiance if you do it in conjuction with the exhaust and intake.
