What exactly is involved in getting the rotating assembly balanced? Like what does a machine shop do? And should the motor be copletly assembled or what?

Yes, the motor needs to be completely disassembled. Its a lot like getting your wheels balanced for the crank, and the rest of the parts are wieghed and the parts are made equal in wieght.

There isn't really anything in the head that can be balanced like that. Charges differ by shop, call a local one and ask.

Balancing the rotating assembly makes sure that the counterweights on the crank shaft are equal to the weight of the pistons, rods, pins and any other weight attached to the crank. The weight of oil can even be accounted for in hi-perf and racing balance jobs.

The rotating assembly should be balanced any time you change the weight of the compenents. So if you buy a non stock crank, you should get it balanced with the other parts you plan to use, other wise the crank counter weights may not weigh the same as the reciprocating parts.

Local shops in Seattle charge anywhere from 150-300 bucks depending on the engine, complication and how thourou they are.

Nope. Lightening, balancing, and knife-edging are all separate jobs from JBP with the core charge. However, given the entire idea of having your crankshaft worked, it's best to go with all 3 like I am.
