Replace 02 sensor<>Wideband?
Friday, November 18, 2005 11:29 PM
Well my 02 sensor is fubered and I figure I will need a wideband anyway once I boost in the future so I guess i'll just save up for one.
However I know absoulutely nothing about wideband tuning so I was wondering if anyone knows of a tutorial on tuning with a wideband. Any help would be great, thanks

Basically you need some type of device to tune your air fuel ratio. Look into products like the Greddy E-manage or Megasquirt (which is what I plan on using). You can also tune (when under boost) by using an FMU, look into the Cartech ones, they are popular ones to use on our cars.

When you do get your Wideband installed with some sort of tuning device, you will be able to tune it to your best performance needs.

Also when you get your wideband, dont use that to replace your stock sensor.. Drill and tap another bung right before the stock sensor.

on our ecotecs we have to have the tach adapter to run an AFC correctly right?

Actually no.

When you install the SAFC initially, you will only see half your RPMs (so if your idling 1000 RPMs, you're only going to show 500 RPMs on the SAFC). To fix that, all you have to do is go into the options on the SAFC and change the cylinder amounts from 4 cylinders to 2 cylinders. This will show your full RPM range. It will not effect performance at all (in a negative way). The reason it does this is because we run off of a 2 coil ignition system. I have even talked to the guys at Apexi and they said that it works fine and it will not effect your performance in a negative way.

where to buy a wideband o2 sensor?

If you want just the sensor...here: Bosch Sensor.

If you want a whole wideband kit, there are various types that you can get, just pick what type you like.

I have the AEM wideband, and no matter what I did, I could not get it to run correctly. You have to put both sensors in to keep your ECU happy. The problem that I found with the AEM wideband is that the narrowband sensor signal was 0-1 volts. The GM stock sensors use 0-1.250v. Doesn't seem like much difference, but it was enough that the ECU decided my sensor was bad, and went into limp mode.

So then I cannot just replace my stock 02 sensor with the one from the wideband?

nope. you position the wideband sensor about 14 to 18 inches from the turbo if you have one, or if not, just slightly downstream of your header collector

cant I replace the o2 sensor with the wideband one and manipulate it with an AFC or something? Remember I'm new to computer tuning..

No, the Wideband sensors aren't capable of reproducing the narrowband outputs that the stock ecu needs to see, at least not accurately enough to work that I've found.

ok I gotcha, So if I bought a 5 wire bosch sensor and placed it in the stock bung could I use that for my wideband and splice it in so it would work with the ECU also?

No, thats exactly what i'm saying you can't do.

nope. they communicate differently. you will need a new bung. hell, go to an exhaust shop, they will probably have plenty just laying around

I don't mean to thread-jack!....but I have a question......I'm quite a noob....however have done my share of sleuthing for the better good of the J-body community on here, mostly in the rear-disc brake swap thread. I've been searching for peoples air/fuel/spark mods and I have found myself a little more confued then before.

Between all the different options out there what would be the best to purchase seeing as a turbo will be in the near future. I'm currently running a Dis-2 on the stock coils and like it however Im going to need an FMU so now what? Could I just get an AEM wideband w/ a cartech FMU? Or is there a better all in one solution I'm missing. I don;t want to get crazy with the tuning I just want to do it right. I've got a project motor in the works, built for about 18psi so many air/fuel/spark mods will be required but not sure what to use/do....Please help...I'm very lost. I'd like to keep the DIS if possible but will dump it if an all-in-pne solution is possible. What do people use to watch their EGT's?

P.S. Let me know if you want rear disc brake assemblies. I could help you out.

I'd suggest an SAFC and an Innovative Motorsports wideband..AEM makes a good product and everything but there are just widebands that are better and a little cheaper IMO. To watch your EGT's you would probably have to get an EGT guage.

I unfortunetly do not know what SAFC stands for. I've been searching for days now for someone on old post to spell it out and it just doesn't happen.....very sad.

AFC means "Air-Fuel controller" basically I guess its a computerized version of an FMU
You can tune the motors Air Fuel rations till it fits best...Often in conjunction with a wideband o2 sensor.

^ SAFC is not a viable solution for boost tuning, since it works by adjusting your stock map sensor voltage. In boost, you can't adjust the voltage any higher (map sensor is already pegged out), so the SAFC is only good for idle adjustment in a boosted environment.

It is not a computerized version of an FMU, since an FMU adjusts your fuel pressure, and the SAFC adjusts your map sensor voltage. You can't adjust a/f ratio's, you make the MAP sensor "think" its seeing more or less air than it really is, in turn the ECU adjusts the a/f ratio to try to achieve 14.7:1 for that amount of air.

SAFC = Super Air Fuel Controller.

FMU + AFPR > SAFC. Or just get a Megasquirt.

wrong
SAFC = Super Air Fuel Controller.
right
SAFC = Super Air Flow Converter.
sorry had to correct this statement but what shifted said is correct about the map.

either way, SAFC's are not the way to tune for a turbo car.

in my opinion i think it is not the best product out there. but my expernice with this product is with my 240sx and the mass air flow. if i could get my money back for this product i would have gotten a daughterboard or greddy emange.
