My 2.2 Ecotec is shot. I'm going to get it rebuilt but I don't want to rebuild it with the stock parts. I'm only looking for 30-40hp. Can somebody tell me exactly what performance parts I should look into? I've done a lot of research and read through the ECOTEC build guide but I've viewed so much information that it's like sensory overload or something. I want to do it as inexpensive as possible.

rebuilding a motor is not chap by any means. better save some money

Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!
My parents bought the vehicle new and owned it for a couple years then I crashed my truck. I started borrowing the cavalier from them and eventually I just ended up driving the car all the time. for about 6 months the car was owned by then but I was the main driver. During that time I never thought to do any upkeep on it because it wasn't my vehicle and my parents didn't do upkeep because they never drove it and never thought about doing the upkeep. The bad communication between us led to me one day finding the car 4 quarts low on oil.
Since I found that problem the engine has been burning oil a lot. It was recently burning 1 quart a week. I found it this low about 14 months ago and starting 11 months ago I have been making the car payments because I am the main driver of the vehicle. Now that the engine is gone I have taken full ownership of the vehicle and they are paying for a big chunk of the repair. (the car is still in my parents name for insurance reasons though)
The best option we have is to rebuild it (a new crate engine is $4k from GM). I don't know much about cars so If I am paying my mechanic to rebuild the engine I think it makes most sense to go all out and put performance parts in it at the same time. Why par for the stock stuff then upgrade later right? That's why I want to know which performance parts I should use to get the most for the money.

well, Eagle Forged H-Beam Connecting Rods are about $350
Wiseco Forged Pistons are about $475
intake and exhaust valves i seen are about $200
a new flywheel is about $389 (thats if your engine is manual)
a stage 1 clutch is $319 (look above)
and a set of cams are about $559
grand total comes to $2292
and thats just the price on parts. not to mention shipping and install
so you see rebulding your engine aint cheap. but if i was to choose which ones to do first, id pick the connecting rods and pistons

I will probably end up with a performance header and cams. Maybe a port and polish. You have to consider though, I HAVE to rebuild the engine so I will be spending a lot anyway, but in my opinion it'd be smarter to spend a little extra and get the "good stuff".

Plus all bearings, gskts, and machining.
Better to just pick up a stock used eco from the junkyard. Bout $4-500
It would definatly be cheaper to go with a used one from a junkyard like Tom said. I did and with labor and everything it was like $1100.

The big question is are you staying all motor or going boost. What you do to your motor will determine your future...example: Whether to invest in Stage 2 "all motor" camshafts or stay stock till boosted and invest in F.I. camshafts OR replacing the bottom end and going 10.5:1 compression or waiting till your boosted and dropping to 9:1 compression. You need to ask yourself more questions before you even touch your motor.
Also, what kind of port and polish can effect your powerband a good deal...a bigger porting can shift your powerband upward into higher rpms but result in loss of power in the lower end.
Stuff like that is what you should think about.

I'm not doing any kind of FI on this car. I don't want this car to go past 190hp.
In any case... I am pretty sure I've made my decision. My mechanic found a company that rebuild my engine with 30-40% more hp than stock. (35% is 189 hp). Granted, without getting an upgraded chip I won't really take advantage of that high output rebuild.... but they are charging $2,200 for the rebuild and $800 for my mechanic to put it back in for me. This particular company (I don't know the name, my dad has been doing all the talking) will get my engine and rebuild it in less than 24 hours. If all goes well (meaning the loan goes through) I will have a potential 189hp cav by early next week.
Now I'm sure you all want to tell me "do the work yourself, don't pay a mechanic" but heres the problem... I don't have any of the know-how to do this work myself nor do I have the tools and things needed. I'm also a college student and I work 35 hours a week so I really don't have the time to do it either. So doing the work myself isn't an option for me.
