Hello, hola, shalom! I just joined the boards and this is my first post. I've been posting on speedtv.com for a year now and am expanding my horizon. My mom has a 2003 Cavalier LS Sport coupe, arrival blue, 5-speed. What is the rev-limit for this engine? Is it safe to rev it that high? I'm in love with the sound of a rev-limited engine.
6450 i think. you can rev it that high, but it wont last long

Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!
Even occasionally revving it that high?
why would you want too anyway?
well, it only takes one time to screw up an engine

The ECOTEC motor is a reliable motor and good for handling high revs BUT in stock form, you aren't making anymore power after about 5900 RPMs (maybe even less). Only true way to find out is by dynoing your vehicle to see where your powerband is.
Now, if you're talking about revving in neutral...well that's just pointless.

Ecotec? It revs to 10,500 yo.
I was a retard, and now I'm permanently banned.

^^^ what he said, however you can rev up to the limiter without harming your motor. That is after the discussion I had with GM.

New Picture comming this summer.
^ You had a discussion with GM and they said revving up to the limiter would not hurt the engine? Cool, how did you score that. By the looks of your sig., you like pushing the rev-limits as well.
there is no point in hitting the rev limiter period. If you racing your want to shift just before the rev limiter and if your in neutral reving it that high well... Thats just newb.

What about if it's an AUTO ? I been meaning to ask the same question because when I hit the gas it appears I hit the limiter around and close too 6K and I let go the gas just a bit until the engine and trans engages the next shift automatically would it be bad for me to continue holding down the gas ? will this cause my engine or trans any damage to this if I should decide to hold down the gas and continue going above 6K ? that's my question ? Thanks

just hold down the gas, it wont hurt anything.
but if you let go of the gas when the tranny shifts that can cause some damage. or something like that, cnat really remeber

I have an auto trans and I switch gears when I race, but I don't race that often.. I usually switch at 5500 but I keep my foot on the gas and it doesn't switch til about 6000-6200 on ocasions. Should I still do what I do? And if the trans messes up I can always buy a stick

you shift an auto during a race?

Going through the gears like that only holds the trans in that gear or lower.
Pretty much made for inclines and towing. (towing in a J, lol)
and both my 5speed eco fires redline at 62xx and change. Not 6500 like cavi's
what is the point of revving so high? Just because you love the sound of the engine? Kinda ridiculous if you ask me...lol
Hi
the rev limiter on a 2.2 ecotec is 6250. with an automatic, its better to let the computer do the shifting for you - shifting manually when racing only slows you down. when you floor it, the transmission will shift at the best possible points to keep in peak power (close to the redline). it won't damage the engine by hitting the rev limiter, simply because no matter how hard you floor it, it will shift before that.
There is no point of hitting the limiter, i agree. Depending on your mods, your maximum horsepower will be reached at 6,000 RPM. My sig just shows 6,500, but i would be an idiot if I took it there every time i raced.

I know those gears in auto are for towing but those gears have more torque, no? And torque is what I want when I race, because I race from starting line to whoever has lead before the end of the back road.

Its just not healthy from my viewpoint to shift an auto while driving. I bet your clutch hates you when you do it. Torque is good but we have enough of that to get us off the line. Horsepower will pull you through in lengthy pulls like the 1/4 mile (at least from what I've seen).

Blown.
no.
shifting an auto is pointless. the computer will shift faster than you anyway

ecotec rev limiter stock is 6500 rpms, thank you and goodbye...
testing with my msd proved that to me...

Why wouldn't you shift an auto. And No the CPU won't shift better for you in a race that's horsesh!t and has been put to the test on MANY Occasions!!
BETTER= winning the race!!
I don't care if the CPU shifts faster or better which it don't but if you want to race somthing that you may have a chance with you want to shift your auto.
