There are so many differences in the two that unless you have a complete donor car it's going to be a project you don't really want to get into.

Lift your hood and look around...basically if you can see it, it has to be swapped. Aside from the motor and trans, you have to trade the complete power steering system, air conditioning, wiring harness, computer and probably a whole lot of other things I'm not thinking of right now.

For the time, trouble and money you'd put into a project like that combined with what you already spent on a 2.2 Cavalier, you could have already had a Z24.

If your not installing the motor and trans..then your still not getting anything cheap. You can pick up a z24 3gen..say 1996-7 for 4G's CND in perfectly good condition. If you do find a z24 of those years for 1000 with blown motor, trans, suspension work needed. By the time you finish repairing everything, your money into the car is gonna pass the amount of 4G's easily.
If you can't dish out $4,000 right now, save up and buy one later on. Not only that but insurance is gonna kill you. When i first got my 3rd gen at 20 years old..i was paying 3,500 a year...and that was with a clean record

Its not as bad as people made it out to be, but yeah it can be expensive if you dont have the time or patience to wait for parts to come up cheap. When I swapped over on my old 4dr it took over a year for the right deal to pop up, a 99 2.4 & trans with 20k miles for $800. But if you can't find usable wiring anywhere, it cost over $1k from GM, upper mount is like 100. Then exhaust, pcm, coolant tank, etc. Easist swap out there.
