exhaust idea...

i'm looking to boost my car in 07 (turbo) but i'd like to get some more performance out of the exhaust without dropping the money on a header and such that i'd just be getting rid of in a year...

my idea is to have a local exhaust shop bend up a 2.25" downpipe to go from the stock manifold into a 2.25" highflow cat and then back to my 2.25" catback system. i'm considering this because the stock cat could use replacing and i could probably get it all done for around $100 or so.

anybody ever done this before? does it sound like a good idea or no? comments/questions/criticisms/etc welcome...

Well actually this isn't something new, lots of people do exhaust upgrades and just don't change the header cause they know they are doing turbo soon.

Honestly, there is no point in trying to do some custom 2 1/4" downpipe, it won't make much of a power difference. That small amount of piping would be a waste of time for a welder.

Now, you could do this or do exactly what I'm doing (or actually have done). I have a 2 1/2" exhaust system, 62 MM, A massive P & P head (Patriot Stage II Head) that's basically made for forced induction. I have alot more modifications but these modifications are great for forced induction but not the greatest to have N/A...honestly might be too big all around but it wouldn't matter by time you're ready to turbo because it would be the biggest payoff and you won't be spending money twice replacing your exhaust system from 2 1/4" to 2 1/2" for better performance and you'll have all the bolt ons to gain a little edge out of your new forced induction setup.

Well that's pretty much my suggestion. Good luck to whatever you decide to do.

Just wait until you are boosted and then have 2.5" done. Save your money and get boosted quicker

I was a retard, and now I'm permanently banned.

i won't be boosted till '07... i already know that based on the money i'll have available... i plan on getting the car repainted this spring so...

the reason i'm looking at stepping up the downpipe is because i'm 99% sure that my stock cat is clogged and is hurting performance. it seems kinda dumb to just weld in a 2.25" highflow to the stock downpipe...

i do plan on going full 2.5" from the turbo back when i boost in '07.

njhk... if i got the p&p head, i'd be pushing my boosting date back even further...

It might seem dumb BUT the power differences would be little to not noticeable. I mean, you want to do it, it's your car you can do whatever but I'm just saying I wouldn't waste the extra money for something that will more than likely not be noticeable.

And about our catalytic converters, our cars are actually pretty high flow but it's best to keep your inlet/outlet sizes the same as the rest of your exhaust system, otherwise that will be come a restrict point in your exhaust system.

i understand that i want to keep the same size as the exhaust will only flow as good as it's smallest point. i don't expect huge gains from this, just a bit better performance that i feel i'm probably loosing from the stock cat (as i said, i'm pretty sure it's clogged as the car smells like rotten eggs anytime i get on it) i figure'd that i could just have the downpipe done when i had a 2.25" high flow welded in place of the stock cat... seems like it might help a bit...

I guess I understand what you're saying but I'm just giving you advice from a performance point of view.

I'd say take care of that catalytic converter ASAP...that effects your MPG and your Performance a good deal.

the car is going to sleep for the winter here shortly so it's not a huge priority for me this year... but i kinda figured the cat was hurting performance...

i dunno... was just a thought i had about the downpipe...

OK good enough. Good luck.
