N/A build up help
Tuesday, October 11, 2005 4:18 PM
ok first i would like to say...i did some searches...but i couldnt really get what i was aiming at...maybe i wasnt doin it right or sumthin...so forgive me for being the "aggrivating noob"

I am going to soon start building up my engine..i have the 2.4L and i was originally going to go with the boost, but then i always found more interest and excitement in the N/A route...but not many people go that way with tuner cars...so i know absolutely pretty much nothing. I do know however..that you aim for higher displacement and compression ratios. I might be wrong on this but on most muscle, v8, or w/e you call them you bore and stroke...i am not 100% on what EXACTLY that does...ups displacement right? makes cylinders larger or something like that?... well my question is can you do that to the 2.4 and if so how large can you go?

i had another question, because i was reading in other forums and random threads and such that many cavy owners were using camaro, and corvette parts. I understand that the computer has to read all of these parts and such..but is it possible if you are going for the n/a route could you possibly use certain parts off those cars?
i appreciate any help you guys are willing to give..and if i am going to build this new motor where should i start?

...are you trolls that dumb that you cant realize mid 15s is slower then 14s?

you bore out the 2.4 or any engine. most go .20 overbore. i wouldnt go any higher than that
and if you rise the compression too much, you have to use race gas in it

Most people don't go the NA route because there's not enough engine to start with. You shouldn't go more than .040" over, and a stroker crank isn't available (you'd be looking at about $2000 to have one made...forged of course.)
You won't be able to use any of the V8 parts because you have a DOHC engine, so nothing is interchangeable.
If you insist on going "NA", maybe think about some nitrous, as you can use it on an engine built "NA" (and in the end, you're going to want it).
Definately look into some cams and some head work, as that's where the power lies in these little engines. Also, try to reduce weight wherever possible. You can swap to a 2.3L oil pump which will give you better lubrication, as well as rid you of the balance shaft (run a search for more info). That's basically the extent of my knowledge on the DOHC engines...

yea i knew about the cams and head work...my main questions were just on like maximum boring and using the other parts..and compression...which i gathered 10.5:1 is what most of you recommend...but has anyone put a daly driver higher than that on an LD9 with out major problems?

I doubt anyone around here is even running around with 10.5:1. All I've heard of is 10:1 on an LD9

just a suggestion...maybe think about swaping heads and getting the quad 086 head fitted on..get forged internals..raise the compression a bit..a good PnP....loose as much weight on the engine as you can.

Karo's engine is perfectly streetable. I designed it for street use in his Sunfire. He decided afterward to turn the into a drag only car. But the engine is still the same, except for his lack of decent mufflers.

Well, when he said 'mod list,' I assumed he was talking about everything. Karo's engine isn't even close to un-streetable I know. I was actually surprised when I realized that's all he was putting in the car though...
