i had an aftermarket muffler on the car (3a racing muffler) and it fell off...i dont know how, it was welded on..so it was either a bad weld job or....someone stole it

????i dont know, either way, its no longer on there....i like the way an aftermarket muffler sounds and all, but there are times when it can just be too loud inside the car (when your trying to talk to people, when your on the phone, etc). The muffler i had came w/ a silencer, but someone stole it after a month of having the muffler, so i dont really know if a silencer helps.
here are a few questions i have:
should i get another aftermarket muffler? or go back to stock?
if i do aftermarket, what do u suggest? i've heard good things about megan. any others?
one thing i would like to know: is the flowmaster 40 series muffler good on our cars? i'm not expecting it to boost the horsepower more than a "bean can" but will it make the car more quiet inside the car? is the sound better than a "bean can"?
please help me out! thanks
i would reccomend a complete cat-back exhaust, or a custom exhaust. You can usually get a good one done for less than $300.00
unfortunately sound is the cost of performance, unless your one of those audio guys on hear with 3 layers of dynamat
Mine is only loud under hard acceleration,or when the engine needs to work, ala going up mountains.
Other than that it's fairly quiet.
putting some dynamat in your trunk, and up thru to the passenger compartment will also help alleviate this "noise" problem.
I've had many people complement my car on it's nice non-buzzy tone. Especially when I get to really whine it out at an autox.

...usually, njhondakilla gets these posts firsts.

but now its soul horse's turn, heheh...
...go with aftermarket, youll like the hp gain...but you wont see much for just a muffler change, other than sound. omg, dont buy another 3a/apc muffler, please! most people (including myself) will recommend a magnaflow (goto hottexhaust.com for 100000000 choices), borla, or a dynomax muffler. they all flow well and sound pretty nice. however, while you are doing the exhaust work, why not go ahead and get a custom catback pipe to complement it? itll sound much nicer, probably give you another 4-5 peak whp too. a custom job from a shop including the pipe and muffler shouldnt run too much more than 200.00. you wont be disappointed.
if you can save up another 275.00, get a pacesetter armor coat header, and a hiflow cat, and bam, your whole exhaust system is done for good! (unless you turbo...

)
good luck.

ya the 40 series is a really good muffler . some say that it isnt as good for performance but we are only talking about 1 or 2 hp if even that much. the muffler will sound kind of raspy up are 5500 rpm when it is cold but after it warms up it just sounds mean.
ITS ALL FUN IN GAMES TILL SOMEONE GETS SHOT IN THE LEG
get a dynomax superturbo muffler from summitracing.com|
they are cheap like 45 bucks, they are close to free flowing, and are not obnoxously loud. they also appear to be a stock muffler,
i had on it made a nice low pitch tone that was not anywhere near annoying, and no one knew i had an exhuast
Sorry...

yea, i kept looking on flowmaster and figured if i go w/ them ,i'll prolly go w/ a 50 series muffler....what do u recommend if i go magnaflow? and if i do a cat back...what size piping? 2.25? 2.5? i seriously doubt i'll go turbo or bottle...just intake, exhaust...and maybe a header...so what would u suggest? and what muffler would be best for this? thanks for the help
^^^The 50 series delta flow Flowmasters sound really nice once their warmed up. Fairly quiet too as long as you have a resonator of some sort. If your gonna fo a full cat-back, go with 2.25" compression or mandrel-bent piping. Stay away from crush bent piping if at all possible. Heres what I would do if I was in your shoes:
Pacesetter Header
2.25" in/out Magnaflow cat
18-24" glasspack or resonator
2.25" in/out 50 Series Delta Flow Flowmaster
Just have an exhaust shop bend up the piping to connect it all and your done. You would probably be looking at around $500 for all the parts, piping and labor.
and if i fork out this much money for a full exhaust instead of just a muffler...what kind of hp gains am i looking at?
the muffler fairy took it.... deffinatly get a catback system.......header also if you got the cash
With a well designed system, maybe 5-7hp, but that's on the optimistic side.
But the real advantage is when you start to replace things upstream from the exhaust the gains will be more fruitfull.

what about the pace setter cat back for the ecotecs? from what i have been reading, their header is pretty good. are the cat backs? id like to get one cause it has a resonator on it and its not a canister muffler

their headers are GREAT. Their catbacks are SH*T.

i dunno why there is a quality diff., youd think steel would be steel, but ive seen first hand pacesetter catbacks rust, pit, and fall off of many diff cars, cavis included. stay away from that one. youll hear the same from most, but some will say that i dont know what i am talking about. i do. go with what i posted originally: buy a muffler, resonator, new hi flow cat (if you got the change), and get a muffler shop to bend you a 2.25 inch pipe and weld the rest in-line, and you are golden.
