advice on 2.4l build
Wednesday, October 05, 2005 4:14 PM
before we start....i already did a search....and didn't find anything satisfying.....

i have a '00 z24 with a blown motor sitting in it.....with 180,000+ miles on it.....i figured take the opportunity to rebuild....at the same time build UP.....i want to go N/A....NO boost....NO nitrous....just an all motor....daily driver....here is my list so far....

to start i've been eyeing this engine kit from importperformanceparts.net....

2.4 engine kit
  • complete gasket set
  • performance copper head gasket
  • ross/wiseco forged pistions (3.540, 3.552, 3.572 bore) (9.5, 10.5, 11.1:1 comp ratio)
  • performance moly rings
  • performance wrist pins - ultra lite 79 grams
  • federal mogul main bearings
  • federal mogul rod bearings
  • cam bearings (if applicable)
  • timing set (oem)
  • lifters

i was thinking of sticking with the stock bore size....and go with the 10.5:1 comp ratio....

for the camshafts....i'm thinking of going with the jbp stage 2 performance camshafts.....stainless steel valves from carcustoms....get the head ported and polished (maybe 1mm over).....and stiffer valve springs.....

is there anything else i NEED???.....especially in regards to fuel management......and/or the ecu

thanks

my idea

10.5:1 ----- .040" over pistons (wiseco, JE, Ross.....)
Cometic head gasket (way better then Copper)
Modified HO cams (modify the intake to work with the 2.4)
Eagle Rods
Clevitte 77 Main and Rod bearings
ARP main and head studs
2.3 oil pump conversion
Lighten and Knife edge the crank
Light weight Flywheel (if its a 5 speed..... if its not, convert it to 5 speed)

Then get some kind of tuning software...... like the HP Tuners, if it ever makes it out.

Fuel..... going to need larger injectors...... aim for some 310 GM S/C injectors, and a Walbro fuel pump......

I agree with changing the compression...don't think your computer will be happy with that high of a compression ratio.

I would invest in an MSD Ignition system as well and say a Greddy E-Manage to control your fuel issue because you will need better fuel tuning.

the only thing you need to do when you up your compression, is to retard the timing..... to prevent detonation.

Run the MSD unit, that will retard the timing, and give your spark a boost.

What about knock issues?

thanks for the input....

i WAS thinking about the .040" overbore on the pistons.....because i'm almost positive that i'm going to need some block work.....worst case....i'll have to replace it......cometic head gasket???....i'll look into that....so the "secret cams" would be better than the jbp cams???.....i'm kind of eerie about the the light weight flywheel......the con's out weight the pro's.....and yes...its a 5-speed......i was thinking light weight pulleys instead.....injectors is no surprise....and i'll look into the msd ignition system as well....now...from what little info i found during my search....i read that the fuel pump wouldn't need to upgraded.....but i'll look further into that.....

thanks again....

sweeet.....thanks

what kind of msd ingnition system should i use for a N/A set-up???....

can i remove the balance shafts with out doing the 2.3 oil pump conversion....or is that part of the conversion???....

They have coils available for the 2.4?

You wire the MSD coils to the DIS 2. The coils wont be a direct replacement. They will have to be re located.

since i'm upping the compression using 10.5:1 pistons....would i need to worry about the piston hitting the valves???.....would i have to get shorter rods???.....

oh...and if i get the mds dis-2 with the msd coils....wouldn't that be pretty much swapping out the idi cover for spark plug wires???....

i've seen a writeup on this somewhere. i think it takes modification of the IDI cover

yeah well how do u swap the coil cover and how do u do the whole msd ignition and wires with the msd coil packs, also would the AFC work good for your computer to control fuel and ratios????????

Shouldnt need to replace the block unless you put a hole in it.

Cometic Gasket, look in the GP Forum.

Secret cams = more cost effective.

Light weight flywheel = Best mod you can do short of N2O or Boost

Light weight pulleys = dont even notice them

Upgrade your fuel pump before your injectors, then add a Adj. FPR

If you want 10.5:1, I can get you close (about 10.4:1) Pick up some FLAT top pistons, no dish..... (should be about 9.7:1) in a .040" overbore, then pick up a Cometic N/A MLS Gasket (.030")..... that should get you in the neighborhood of 10.39:1...... w/o going crazy on the pistons...... if you want, you probably could get OEM 00+ pistons in a .040" overbore.....

Detonation causes knock........ retard the timing, fuel up with higher octane.......

well thats just it...i think i did....won't go into too much detail...but i tried starting it after i replaced the part i thought was the problem....and it was making A LOT of noise...so i stopped....something told me to look under the car...and sure enough...oil was just gushing out....from where???...i haven't the slightest....it wasn't from anywhere visible...

Quote:

yeah...i was thinking about that after you mentioned it....i'm sure i can find a pair for LESS than half the price of the jbp cams....and the lifts aren't too far off....

hmmmm....starting to change my mind about it....but doesn't it affect the overall hp???...

how about underdriving???....

okay...thinking about what you said here....a 10.5:1 piston won't give me 10.5:1 compresson once its in the engine???.....

No it will not affect the HP. It frees up HP the motor already has. Aloows it to rev up quicker.

maybe its not the hp....but i swear i read somewhere on here that the lightweight flywheel has a negative affect on something....

Well if you dont mind a little repair work.
I have a .410 lift exhaust cam for sale.
Been modified for the hex drive and all that good stuff.

Problem there is a little chip in one of the lobes.
Just small enough to be annoying.
I got it like that from the classifieds unfortuneately.

So if you want to have it fixed.
At least you'd have a kick azz exhaust cam to work with.

okay...here is the list of parts so far....

i'm sticking with the engine kit...only one i can find that has all...or most of what i need....i'll get the 10.5:1 piston with 3.572 bore....and swap out the copper head gasket for a cometic one....i looked into the federal mogul bearings....and they're good quality bearings so i'm sticking with them....

camshafts...i'm going with the "secret cams".....might buy them new...don't know yet...

turbo tech racing
eagle connecting rods

carcustoms
arp head studs
arp main studs
stainless steel valves
rc 310cc injectors

msd
dis-2 (pn# 62112)
gm 2-tower coil pack (pn# 8224)
msd coil interface module (pn# 8870)

can't find anything on a walbro fuel pump....any other suggestions???.....thanks....
