Hey guys, I was wonder. Is the Crankshaft pulley the same as the underdrive pulley. If they are, whats a good pulley to use, I know rk sports got one and rsm has one as well. I also see a Billet Crankshaft Pulley offer by GM performance parts. Its part number 88958631. And I was also wondering for thoses of you who have one, how bad is it on your radio and stuff, I have a indash tv radio and a small 120 watt amp on my 6/9 thats it. Would that be a problem with a performance pulley?
Beware the Rouge Dragon.
An underdrive crank pulley is a
replacement for the crank pulley. Its not an actual pulley in addition to the crank pulley. All this can be found in the Performance FAQ.
RSM's is the absolute best. Lightest, stock size so it doesn't affect your charging system and other belt part numbers to remember.

I believe that's if you want to get rid of your A/C and other electrical accessories.

is there a noticeable difference with the rsm or rksport?

I have the RK Sport pulley on mine right now. Yes there is a difference in higher RPM's and you will notice it revs faster. Now, at the same rate, at idle, my headlights are dim and if my blower motor for my defrost is on, it BARELY works until you give it a little bit of gas. Same way with gauge cluster lights. Everything dims down. You can eliminate that effect by just using the RSM pulley, which is even lighter anyways.

the guy at the local customizing shop around here told me that the underdrive pulley only adds like 1hp..i dont know what the purpose of it is
I def. don't reccommend underdrive pulleys. However, I do have the RSm lightweight crank pulley and I am soon getting the lightweight alt. pulley as well. Why? Because for the moeny, they are a great performance gain. Not as much in raw HP, but in response. Nice response is always a good thing, esp. on a street car that only sees minor track use.
I'll have a sig someday....................
how much does that puley cost?
sorry to thread jack but can someone please remind me if the 2.3 Pulley is an underdrive, a ligher or both? my memory crapped out.
from the FAQ of tthe j-body.org, the 2.3 has a underdrive pulley

An underdrive pulley is a
replacement for the stock crank pulley. The stock pulley is not called an underdrive pulley.
Teh RSM pulley I believe is around 180-190 dollars. The alt. is about 80 dollars.

^ so the RK Sport pulley only does this, and not the RSM? or is that the same for both?

This will hold true for almost any underdrive pulley. Moreso if you're using both an underdrive crank AND underdrive alternator pulley.
How tough is it to change the crank pulley to the RSM lightened one? Do you have to lift or drop the engine to do the swap?

It was as easy as removing the passenger side wheel, impact, loosen belt tensioner, remove pulley, install new pulley, install new belt. BAM. but with the RSM pulley, you of course use your stock belt, which, make sure you have lots of slack to get that pulley in there, and make sure it's good and tight on the crank
