what is the difference in a flowmaster 40 and flowmaster 40 deltaflow? would it make a difference on a cav? and how much pipe sould i have after the muffler? or could i have it all the way at the back w/ just a tip?
thanx in advance

I had a 3inch 40 series and all I can say is that sometimes my ears still ring from it.
That has got to be by far the loadest muffler in the whole cration of mufflers!!! I don't know if it was how mine was installed but the resonance inside the car at highway speeds was down right un Godly. It works great when the engine hits around 3500 -
4000 rpm it feels almost like a v-tec cam kicks in and the car pulls harder. Guess its that whole negative presure thing going on but since I'm not a Flowmaster tech I don't want to speculate on the reasons it does it I just know it sure did. If you can get over the noise they're a great muffler. As for the delta flow I'm not sure about how it sounds so I don't want to give you any bad info. Hopefully someone else can take it from here.
Good Luck with your new muffler.

the delta 40s are quieter, but flowmasters work better on older cars without cats. regardless of what flowmaster tells you, they dont work the best on our cavs. they have different specs for backpressure that dont compliment 4 cyl exhaust pulses. flowmaster makes excellent sh@t, but not for us
. . . you would be better off with magnaflow or borla. try to stay to the oval mufflers too. cylindrical "coffee cans" make much unnecessary raspy noise (unless that is what you want). oval mufflers give excellent flow with a sound thats not as much of a cop magnet.
I love my flowmaster delta 40. It is loud yes but that is what a resonatyor is for. I ave 2.5" catback as of right now an di can feel the diffeence in power especially in the top end. we will see how it is when the header high fowcat and resonator go in.
I don't need no stinking SIG. Wait this is one.
DOH!
The 40 series is the loudest muffler Flowmaster makes. Like I said I don't know if it was cause it was a 3incher or what it was but the resonance I'M talking about was from the hollowness of the muffler not the exhaust itself. If that makes any sence.

Thing is, the flowmastersdon't have any sound deadening packing.
They even say so on the website.
Besides that, for me thye just weight to dang much.
They are heavy mufflers because of all the steel in there.
That little 60 series muffler was as heavy as the longer stock joint

Remember....syringes go in the RED waste basket.
i got 3 inch turbo back exhaust with a 50series flowmaster its nice and quite, love how it souds, i didn't want a typical coffee can exhaust like most 4 cylinders...
the reason i asked about flows is b/c i heard they give good power, but if they aren't good for our cars, what about a magnaflow or borla...i dont want it to be a cop magnet but i do want it to be heard some, but mostly i want the most power i can get from it. its going to be going on 2.5" cat back (probably w/ a magnaflow cat). so what is a good muffler to compliment that if not the flows?

magnaflow makes an excellent muffler for our cars. it is a straight thru perforated core, so there is no glass-pack that can break down and sound like sh@t in a year. the magnaflow will definitely be heard, especially between take-off and ~3000rpm and again at cruising speed, but it wont get you pulled over for sound ordinance. as one of the guys mentioned, and in-line resonator is a great idea, it'll keep your high flow, and cut down unnecessary gurgle and raspiness. no one wants to sound like a "riceburner" gurgling and choking when its trying to shift
I have a flowmaster 40 series non delta flow on my 1990 cav Z24 3.1 V6, the muffler is a 40 series 2.25' inlet/oulet, along with a magnaflow 3inch cat mated to the rest of the 2.25' piping..and flowing out the back is a set of dual DTM Pilot tips which sets it off...the car is really loud..in a good way I love it I tought about borla first cause of quality..but bottom line..too expensive, then magnaflow but I didn't really wanna have the ordinary magnaflow muffler everyone has, so then I checked flowmaster, their not great on performace but what am I gonna do to a 3.1?...so that didn't matter, the more I read about the 40 the more I was impressed and for $120 Canadian..it was sold...mated with the 3" high flow cat and pilot tips..my car has a very low subtle rumble at idle, and roars to life at about 2500rpm...and then rises in sound as rpms rise, I think for the price/sound/ not so much performace side of things, you should check out the flowmaster 40.
