Sorry to post again......But does anyone know why my new resonator is making a zzzzZZZZZZZZZ nosie, when I give it gas......It is pretty annoying and I just got my exhaust system installed yesterday and it wasn't doing it yesterday......But today for some reason it is doing it.......I took it back to the shop and he said that my resonator just needs to break in and it should stop the noise. Is this true, otherwise what else could be the problem??? Thanx!!!
Oh yeah, at first when it happened I was listening in the car while driving and it sounded like the Mangaflow exhaust was making that zzzzZZZZZZZZZ NOise, but when putted on the lifter and checked out from under the car it was the resonator...probably the flow of sound when driving makes it seem like it was coming from the exhaust.
how large is it? and what brand?
sometimes it may take awhile for the carbon buildup... but if its small and of cheap quality, it might be like that for a while...
Don't know what brand it is, I got it from Midas and they got it delivered from a warehouse, but all I know is that it is OEM stock piping.....It costed me $120 for it with labor to weld on the Magnaflow exhaust ($125 for exhaust), so it wasn't cheap for me, but yeah it could be cheap........But will that zzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZ sound go away eventually???
no idea.... thing is midas will usuaiiy give resonators with louvered cores....NOT GOOD.....
and the quality could be straight dooDOO!... so i cant say for sure yes or no on will it go away...
also shop around if you ever do that again next time... a resonator should cost no more than 50-60$... thats if you buy top of the line stuff.... the resonator shouldnt have cost extra to weld in if they were already doing stuff.
No, it came with the exhaust pipe, already factory welded on
Resonators from what I understand are basicly the same thing as a glasspack type
muffler in the fact that they usulay have some kind of a matting that surronds the inner diameter piping and has some sort or luver or hole system punched into the inner piping to allow the sound to be absorbed very simaler to a glass pack. In fact some people actualy use a glasspack for a reonator. Anyway in answer to your question
Just as Event said "it depends" If its any kind of a quality piece then it should. The material needs to "burn in" or at least this is what I've been told by my friend who owns Extreme Muffler on Richie hwy. According to him the "glass pack stuff inside" ( very
technical speek huh?

) Needs to actualy be burned by the hot exhaust gases to be able to quite it down any. I know sounds weird to me to but this is what Rob has told me in the past.
Hope this helps and good luck

so its the one that came with the car? or it came with the aftermarket exhaust?
/\ /\ /\ What he said I'm confused a liitle now. Is the res stock or did they put a new one on?

It is a Stock Resonator, but it is new and came with the Stock ehaust Pipe.Thanx!!!
well thats gonna be restrictive compared to the aftermarket size...
imagine wearing a shoe of your size with a 4 year olds middle part of his shoe spliced into yours....
personally i would have gotten a resonator the same size as the aftermarket pipes you added. magnaflow is usually 2.25, stock is well under 2 inch.
also the size of the stock one is prob too short, at around 12-15 inches .....
shoot for atleast 20 with aftermarket stuff is my rec
The Exhaust Pipe are stock also, it came with the pipe....I just added the aftermarket exhaust.......My OLD custom pipe and old Ravin exhaust are replaced by this new exhaust set up.....I didn't really need a aftermarket pipe cause I didn't want it to be too loud, like my old set up.....Plus I got pulled over way too much.......so going back to stock pipe isn't so bad!!!!

i know this is a little off topic, buy why are louvered cores not a good thing? what are the alternatives?
It was my understanding that all of them had some kind of louvers / holes to allow the sound to pass into the matting material thats inside of them. If not then how would they do anything at all other then take up space?

perforated core = good
why? what's the difference between the two?
Louvered cores has small vanes that stick up into the flow path that disrupt the exhaust gas flow. While perforated cores have holes like expanded metal, that do not stick up and interfere with the exhaust gas flow.
Just a few of the perforated core resonators and glasspacks are Magnaflow, Thrush Magnum Glasspacks(Walker/Dynomax), FlowTech Purple Hornies and Borla. There are more out there, these are the ones I've worked with and are familial with. Best bet, is to do some research on whatever brand you buy.

I want to be clear did they put on a resonator and muffler or did they redo the whole pipe as well. If they put an OEM resonator and a aftermarket muffler did they use the proper size diameter. I know the OEM resonator is not very long. I personally used a Cherry Bomb 29" glass pack as my resonator.

Yeah the Reasonator came WELDED ON to the Stock Exhaust Pipe......I had really no other choice because My custom 2.5 Exhaust Piping Fell Off On the Freeway From the CAT.......BAD WElding Job..........So I decided to get it fix that way and got a new magnaflow muffler along w/ it....
ok. if you have a 2.5 that may be also causeing a bottle neck affect. I got my cherry bomb from Pepboys for around $20 or $25 can't remember. From what i have see any where from 24"-29" resonators are being used on most cars here. Not to many lower than than 24"

that should give you the basics of pretty much any exhaust, dispell some myths you WILL hear, etc.
thank you for posting that Event, i appreciate it. it was very helpful
25 inches of thrush glasspack here. And I couldn't be happier.

Forever a work in Progress
