Alright, I dont know if im crazy or if any one else notices this, but....is it just me or does the first 1/2 of your gas tank last a whole hell of a lot longer than the second tank? I'm sure theres probably a logical explination for it, but I dont know it. I would think the second half would last longer because then the car is carrying less weight so doesnt need to use as much gas? Heh, thats my BS guess, I honestly have no clue, help me out.

well you see your gauge works on a float which electronically sends a signal to your gauge. If you were to get on the ground and look at your tank you would notice that the top of the tank is muck larger then the bottom also you will notice that it takes roughly 25 dollars in Canada to fill the first quarter of the tank where as it takes 32 to fill the whole car from empty understand ?
ahhh..right on, thanks guys

actrullly, since were on this subject......... i know that tanks are shaped at angles, from top, wider, and bottom narower, but what i noticed, is that if i top off my tank, and start driving, MY first half tank will go quicker (once the needle starts moving from full), and the second half last a little longer..........
I thgink we should do a study!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NEwayz. since were also on the gas tank subject.......what the hell is up with that stupid light that comes on, when you need gas......... it coudn't posibly be more retarded, but unlike any other car, instead of having a simple orange little lite next to the letter E, whn youre REALLY empty......... thw warning symbol came on that says.... " CHECK GAUGES"........
All, i'm sayin, i'm used to it now, but the first time that ever happend, i almost freaked out!!!, was wondering what the F**k i did!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

now i laugh at it and mock at it that, it soooooo ghetto !!!!

i think it seems like the second half dont last as long because you never really use it all. you never drive to your empty. so it just seems like it i guess, idk thats just my guess.

alright....but wait a second, i comprehend the whole tank is shaped so the top half is bigger, BUT a half consists of two EQUAL parts. no matter how the tank is shaped, a half should be a half, and both halves shoul be equal, correct?? i know its stupid , but baffles me....if its not really a half, they shouldnt say its a half!
Cavalier z24......A poor man's Camaro....close enough, right?
both halves do not have to be equal....
take a triangle...
half of a perfect square would be right in the middle...
where as half a triangle can be anywhere from to 3/5 to 2/3 of the triangle.
half tank is basically HALF of the FLUIDS inside.
the only time half tank will be exactly half of the tank is when you use a perfectly geometrical shape thats equidistant on both sides...
but even then that goes out the window due to the tank takes up space INSIDE the are the gas also occupies...
so in a nutshell. its reading half of the fluid of the capacity, regardless of shape
understood...gracias

it also be that when you get under a 1/2 tankk you are watching more closly, f it . do a study

unless u cut the triable from the top point to the bottom middle
with my 92 2.2 i made from work to home to work but not back home so i would say about 30-40 miles if you drive it nice. if you have it floored it is about like 20. when the light comes on in my ecotec it is like just around two gallons. the owners book say that the light will come on at 3 to 1 gallons of gas in the tank.
I get about 60 or 70 miles from 1/2 tank in the fire and cav.
I once drove about 35 miles with the light on, car died about 200 yard before gas station
but I coasted it the rest of the way. Now i try not to go below 1/4 tank
it says "CHECK GAGES", there is no U in my light. Wtf are gages? I cant believe GM would let a type like this through so I figured it was a european or canadian thing or something. Wtf is that?

I've never let my car get below 1/4 tank at the lowest. Bad on the fuel pump, it uses the gas for cooling and lube. Plus I'd never know what my check gauges light looks like hah.
Ok, I have 2 J-body gas tanks out of the cars and on the ground. One is a older pre-2000, the other is a 2000+. They do not appear to be shape like V's. Are you referring to the inside of the tank? The outside bottem is flat. the top of the tank is the part that is more uneven.
Plus look at it this way, how far past the full part does the needle go. MANY top their tank off which pushes the needle all the way full and then some until the level comes back down to where the gauge can read.
The one trhing i def, noticed, is that the fuel gauge takses some time to catch up........ like i could top it off....... go inside, pay, come out, leave, and still just a ways down the road its alomst caught up..........

It says Check gages in all of our cars GM is cheap.
I don't need no stinking SIG. Wait this is one.
DOH!
CAVolution wrote:It says Check gages in all of our cars GM is cheap.
No it doesn't. Mine has no such light.
I've got a little gas pump icon on the left side of the cluster that lights up when I'm down to the last 5L or so of fuel.
