2.2 header ? is it worth it ?
Tuesday, September 06, 2005 8:25 AM
I am asking myself the question is an header worth it on a 2.2 (i ditched the turbo idea with the gas price) is yes im thinking about the pacesetter one

also as a side question, Why do all cavalier and sunfire with 2.2/2200 ive seen all have a flex pipe and not mine (still original exhaust line from 96)

Yeah mine worked out awesome. one of my favorite mods. The car just went nuts in the high rpms, wanted to rev forever. Nice gains. Go for it, IMO.

...right

...as compared to what? a manual with the same engine? I'd beg to differ....

you'll pick up some decent power with a header i say go for it

My OBX 4-2-1 header picked up a lot in the low end but it also screamed in the top end as well. As long as you stay away from the painted and either get stainless steel or the pacesetter armour coated one.

i read that the pacesetter header downpipes for a 2.2 engine won't clear an auto tranny.

is that true?

also which header does clear the auto tranny?

hey what about heat wrapping a header?

i never had any clearance issues when i installed my header on my automatic. the header i installed was the OBX 4-2-1. I believe the Pacesetter longtubes clear as well. As far as header wrap... it's not a good idea unless you can get it really super tight. Most people who have tried just end up with rusting. I'd just buy the ceramic coated one (pacesetter calls it armor coat).

I have the Pacesetter ceramic one. Its all top end. I would recommend the OBX one for low end. I don't know why the Pacesetter header (or any header for that matter) wouldn't clear the auto trans..... its no where near it (unless the 4T40E is an extremely weird, wrap around the block shape).

I have no clearance problems with my PaceSetter on my '96 2.2L w/3sp auto. Definitely get the OBX 4-2-1 header to maintain the low to mid range torque(as Spotabee said). It comes in stainless steel or ceramic coated mild-steel. Just like James said above the Pacesetter is all top end, which is fine for a manual or a modified auto. My engine and tranny have been modified, but I want just a touch more off-the-line torque, so I'm going to switch to the OBX.

As far as I know, the only two available are Pacesetter and OBX.

ok i found a firenza "header" im going to make my own header out of it
4-2-1 style Im pretty sure the stock piping on this style manifold is 1 1/2 inch i am continuing the 4 pipe part in this size and the 1 part will be 2.25 but what about the 2 pipe part ? 2 inch ???? or 1 3/4 ?

The downpipe on my OBX didn't clear my 4t40e at all. I had to take a torch to it and put some big dents in it to keep it from rubbing on my tranny pan and axle housing.

ah, see I don't know about the 4t40e. I know it works just fine with the 5spd and the 3t04

This one will probably help a little, but you will still have the choke point on that collector. There are a couple of reputable dealers on e bay that carry the OBX header:dailod and weaponspeed.

I see that you have an automaic, if you shift indicator says "P-R-N-2-1" this means you have the 3sp and you'll be fine with this header.

its P-R-N-D-2-1 for 3 speed auto. If you feel it carefully, the 3 speed auto shifts 3 time which mean 4 gears I think, but that's what I observed. Try it, it'll shift 3 time starting from first gear to 60 miles per hour. Do not floor it, just granny drive it up to 60 mph and you'll notice.

The 3rd "shift" you fell is the torque converter clutch(TCC) engaging. In stead of using the tranny fluid to move the car, it uses a clutch similar to a manual tranny. the TCC will only engage during cruse conditions in 3rd gear.

so i want to get an obx header. they have them on ebay. will they fit my 98 2200 motor??

OBX make a 4-1 for the '98+ 2200s, or if you wnat to get a 4-2-1 you can cut the flange off the other, if you have a 2 1/4" exhaust system(including the CAT) to adapt it to the newer cars exhaust.
