Info on spark plugs

I've seen a lot of people asking questions about plugs lately and I wanted to put this out there so there is no confusion or misinformation. Here's an article (there are 3 parts there) that will tell you everything you need to know:

NGK's Tech. Info

'WEIGHT IS THE ENEMY'

ngk is better than denso? or not i did research on both. all i come up with is ngk is .6 and denso is .4 mm diameter. thicker =better spark?

Guys on here have tried so many different types of spark plugs, all with mixed results.

From my experience and from what I've seen, it seems that the stock AC Delco plugs are the best for our cars, bar none.

Never have I heard of people having problems with them - like they do with the Bosch plugs - and they are reasonably priced and offer excellent durability and performance.

I guess it makes sense though, seeing as they came stock in our cars

if you think "just because it came stock in our cars, its the best" then you def arent factoring in ANY bit of reasoning, why aftermarket is there to improve what we call "stock"

most of the bosch plugs that are single prong are dont really have probs....

nor do other single prong plugs...

SIDE NOTE FOR DRAQ or DRAGFIRE...between denso and NGK, both iridium.... denso would have the edge.... slightly, ever so slightly, but both are an improvement on stock....

why?

simple....smaller electrodes offer less resistances. meaning more electricity IS NOT lost through the conductor.....

same with spark plug wires.... those that offer the least resistance, usually offer the most benefits.....

that doesnt mean go out and buy the fatest wires you can find, but if performance is your goal, a decent set of plugs and or wires with lower than stock resistance would be ideal.

well my 2.4l z24 has no wires but the plugs... hmmmmmmmmm.... so you think denso small tip offers better performance, 12.99 at autrozone for each any more thoughts on these iridium plugs? i want a really strong spark as i will be modifying alot of my engine

NGK V-power for a n/a 2.4. They cost $1.69 normally at Advanced auto.
This should be in the maintance section as well.

Not to jack but what is everyones take on the Bosch Platinum +4? (The 4 tipped ones) Cause I took my #4 plug out, just cause they had never been out and lo and behold, they were +4's. Are they any good, bad, etc? Cause I have some Autolite platinums I can put in, but only if they are better....or should I say would help increase engine performance. J/K.

i wanna go iridium for better performance

what are some problems that you guys have had with the bosch plugs? i just put the 2 prongs in my 97 Z and everything seems alright to me.....i went bosch simply due to the fact that my wallet is hurting right now.

Cavalier z24......A poor man's Camaro....close enough, right?

if you honestly want a strong spark, invest in msd....

the gain you get from stock plugs to iridium isnt large at all....

just a bit more efficiency...

nly thing you really get is quicker startups, slighty better response, and it takes less energy to create a spark than it would on a thicker electroded plug...

if you want a strong spark, do a search for MSD....

Q8. Why do some spark plugs have multiple ground electrodes?

A8. This is an attempt by the manufacturers to increase the service life of the spark plug. The ground electrodes can wear down rapidly in some engines. Tiny particles of metal are removed from the ground electrode each time the plug fires hence they gradually wear away. There is a misconception that a multi ground plug will produce mutiple sparks - this is not true, only the nearest electrode to the centre (i.e. currenty the longest) will spark, as that becomes worn, another electrode will become the longest and replace it as the sparking electrode.

Q9. Do my multi ground electrode plugs outperform single ground plugs?

A9. In most cases, no. The additional electrodes disturb the flow of gases around the spark plug tip and performance may even be reduced. In addition, for high performance applications the additional metal within the combustion chamber will retain more heat and may be more prone to detonation/pre ignition.

http://www.spark-plugs.co.uk/pages/technical/spark_plugs_faq.htm#multi_ground

multi ground electrode spark plugs are a marketing gimmick for the lazy basically....

if anyone is interested in performance, they shouldnt worry about longevity of a plug as much, and actually remove the plugs and check them on a reg basis, so you know if you need to regap them, or how your engine is running.

you can learn a crap load about how your engine is running by "reading" your plugs... think of it as removing a humans digestive organs to monitor how his lifestyle is eating wise

my friend believes that ac delco is better than ngk iridium ix , is he correct????
Re: Info on spark plugs
Sunday, July 24, 2005 8:24 PM
how is it better? ask him....

seriously...

ngk has a smaller electrode, just like denso.... which would mean less resistance..... less electricity is lost through the transfer....

so how would an ac delco be better?

pricewise....then yea , no doubt.....you will pay less for ac delco than an iridium, but theres a reason why its called a "stock plug".
