I was wondering what aftermarket intakes/airboxes people are using with the RKSport (or any other) ram air SS-style hood.
I would like to better use the airflow from the hood similar to stock cars with this style of hood. Any airboxes out there that can be purchased or is this going to have to be custom?
To give you an idea what I'm talking about:
i have not seen anything for the J. and i think most ram air hoods (for the J), the opening on the underside of the hood goes over the strut tower. not realyl sure though

Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!
im sure you could do a custom one to go under your air inlet. that'd be badass

the opening for the RK hoods meet up with the top part of your stock airbox so all you have to do is cut a hole for it.ill try to find a pic

Yeah I have the stock airbox with a hole in it... its restrictive through.
I'm thinking it's going to have to be a custom hand laid fiberglass job.
well i put a new scoop on my car, for less than $50.
i'll try to get pics, but basically i just cut a hole in the stock hood, put a roof exaust vent on the hood used a 4" 1bbl filter air cleaner, 4" x 90deg. downpipe (aluminum), 4" x 3" reducer (galv.), 3"x 90deg. inlet pipe (rubber) and clamps galore.
not 100% finished tho, still got to seal the scoop to hood surface and seal the intake tract.
basically you pop the hood and the scoop stays with the hood, the filter and downpipe stay connected to the intake, a rubber 6" x 4" grommet + weather stripping seals the filter/hood together.
i got all the parts at lowes for about $50 and so far it works quite well, doesnt look too bad either! anyone want a stock airbox?

car is a 1994 cavy w/ 2.2l l4 m/t.

kinkied hose is a great way to slow air flow......GREAT WAY....

It sure is. Interesting none the less.
i think the weapon-r ramair intake if made for the weapon-r intakes only so i dont think you could use that unless you have a weapon-r intake

the word "custom" means to adapt to owners specs or likes
anything thats made thats pretty much universal can be adapted or improved upon
you got any pix paul, cuz i'm gettin a new stock hood wed, mine got busted, but now that means i have an extra hood to try it on and it dont matter if i screw up
I've had some kind of idea for this floating around in my head for a while. Never bought a hood so I haven't tested it out.
I don't know if it would be possible but if you bought a wai, and somehow fit the filter inside the stock air box. cut out the "tail" at the top and sealed it to the hood with weatherstripping or something similar. Now you've basically got a cold air intake. The air box will pull air from the "tail" and from the stock location in the fender well. Dunno if it would work or not.

Just cut a hole in the airbox where the hole lines up from the hood i just took a peice of clay put it over the airbox shut the hood so it would make an even lineup of the hole while the hood is shut then opened and traced it with a new razor (works best if u heat the razor up a lil cause its thick plastic) good idea to get some kinda mesh to prevent any large debris from flying in there, your filter will stop it first but you still dont want a buncha sticks and @!#$ blocking your AF then get some weather strip or some kinda plastic you can glue down around the opening to make a nice airtight seal, i'd show ya pics of mine but no camera atm =\ you wont notice much gain till you reach high speeds like 45-50ish but once you do hit those speeds it runs so smooth epsecially on a cool night, hope this helps you a bit and good luck
sorry mdk no pics yet, maybe sometime today.
i gotta use my sisters camera phone so i can upload the photos,
but once the pics are in the pc i dont know how to get them here.
yeah, i aint too hi-tech.
finally sealed the scoop to the hood, used hi-density foam weather stripping, the black type, and the white type with the deep lines.
i used the blue rtv type 6B for final sealing.
for the air filter ive got a 4" deep dish 1BBL type, but if i can find a k&n 4" x3" af with x-stream filter lid then ill put that on.
the 'scoop' is actually a exaust box for a stove, usually put on a house roof.
it has a good size inlet and closely resembles a schnorkle scoop.
the community i stay in are rather conservative you should see the looks i get when driving my car, the scoop is about 8"-10" tall you see, and the exaust isnt finished yet.
so its visibly and audibly obnoxious.
if y'all know how to upload fotos from email or paintshop please let me know.
MDK, got some pics, cant figure how to get them here but you can check my profile.
they are from a camera phone tho, sorry they aint so great.

I cant believe you actually did that to your car.
I bet it gets a lot of wtf stares.
It's more believable when you read that future plans for his car include...brakes

no brakes (i use manual gears and the e-brake
aww who needs brakes eh?
been thinking of installing a schnorkle instead.
wait til you see the exaust
that def cant be getting any rammed air effect
well this set up is only temporary, it is a template/pilot system, once i design and build a rubber-over-aluminum 4" pipe, with k&n xstream filter lid, and velocity stack, then it will achieve more of a ram effect.
of course when i do that i will also get a new fiberglass hood with precuts/predrilled.
the scoop will be a fiberglass schnorkle type (seen on older dragsters) with rectangle air inlet, or i may get an assembly through harwood.
yeah, the car gets some (

) stares thats ok, at least i know no one else in this area has this type of setup.

what exactly do you plan to do for the bottleneck you are causing using THAT large of a pipe?
from what i can see you have a TB, which is 52mm.... as are most...
50.8mm is 2 inches
4 inch pipe is 101.6mm
your having a 101.6mm of space bottle neck into a 52 mm opening, which can pretty much slow any gain you would get from doing all this....
imagine trying to squeeze a 4 inch orange through a 2 inch plum hole..... will take more effort.
To get the ram air effect youve gotta get more air being forced into your motor than your motor sucks in stock....Thats hard to do in a J, but would be interesting if you got it to work.
