I always thought that if you grandma'd it and let your car accelerate at a "normal" pace it would get the best gas milage...
Well after trying this out and a few tanks of gas, i found that on average i get better gas milage when I 'floor it' off a stop light and stay WOT through most of my accelaeration.
Granted you cant get an average from quantitative data, but you know what I mean.
I've considered other veariables such as windows open/closed, AC on/off, and even the amount of time at city or highway speeds.
When I grandma my accelerations I get about 20-22 mpg, but when I go WOT during accelaration I get 22-26 mpg.
Are there other variables I'm not considering? Are my findings flawed? Could I need more studies to see the truth? Or is this really possible?

how about humidity, air density, the fact that your calculations are probably flawed because think about it. just the science of it doesn't make sense.

odd... i know when i floored it in my old 83 v6 camaro, i got the same gas mileage as when i grandma'd it. Didnt make much sense to me.
Laws of science say you should get worse mileage though...
perhaps check again
the science doesnt make sense, hence my post.
the humidity and air pressure/density have been all over the place around here recently from incoming storms and stuff, but i'd assume they pretty much averaged out throughout my 'study' as it took place in the time frame of 2 days.
And I was usign the same gas from the same station as well ($1.90 a gallon!! WOOT)

i'm not necessarily going to put up the BS flag, but I'm going to say that it's virtually impossible to get better gas mileage by using more fuel in a certain speed rate as opposed to less. because that's what you are doing by romping on it. you could be at 40 mph in 3rd gear at a low RPM or be at 40 MPH in 2nd gear at a higher RPM. just think about it.

Dude Theres Sooo Many Factors In That Test
Agreed that there are many factors. And also agreed that the BS flag is looking pretty good. But I'm telling it straight and am quite confused myself.

that makes no sense at all

Different pumps will stop at different fuel levels.
well for 1 you have a great mechanical advantage in the lower gears , and the higher gears will lug the motor down more
so it is possible

I used the same station, same gas, and same pump. I know I used the same pump cuz there is always only one line of cars that is lined up right for our passenger-side gas fillers (always hated that).
Also I did not double pump after it auto stopped.

Kinda what I was thinking. Although I'm honestly not entirly familuar with the working of the engine/transmission in such a case.
You're reading my line-break, you are a loser.
at WOT you gain speed faster
therfore, requiring letting off the gas earlier than if you were to keep it at a constant 50%
less throttle means more time to accelerate....
perhaps, gaining momentum faster, it lets you reduce throttle earlier, and actually helps gas mileage....
maybe... but doubtful
