After Exhaust installment/ 02 sensor problems?Help
Tuesday, June 21, 2005 9:50 AM
I have had my full exhaust put on about a week ago (Pacesetter Header, Magnaflow universal High Flow Cat, 2-1/4" piping with a Borla Muffler..now i have been running my car for a week now and last night my check in engine light came on..so i wake up this morning and go down to auto zone and run the computer and its reading the 02 Sensor in front of the catalytic converter (which is the 02 sensor in the header..) Yes the New Pacesetter header had the hole for the 02 sensor but it was in the collecter of the header instead of right after cylinder one like the stock exhaust manifold did..i called chevy and ask them about it and they were confused about why this happend so they told me to wait a few days to see if the computer will turn off my check engine light or if not then call them back..now if you know any kind of reason why this happend i would greatly appriciate you help..my only idea is that its reading a totally different airflow and the computer is not used to it but after a week doesnt make sense. . if you'd rather talk in a conversation, my instant messanger is Soberup544. thanks

Was the code saying that the O2 sensor was bad, because when I replaced my exhaust I had the check engine light come on. I just bought a new one and had the codes cleared and the code hasn't come back yet.

just replace the sensor. it's possible it is just a coincidence (sp?) and the sensor happened to go bad after you installed the exhaust. OR the increased exhaust flow and heat could have taken the sensor over the edge and caused it to malfunction. either way, replace the sensor and you will notice a difference in accelleration, throttle response, gas mileage, and your CEL will go away.

I had the EXACT same problem, and that problem was when they reconnect the wires of the sensor, it lowers the ability of the sensor to get a clear read. Getting a new sensor is probably a good idea, but when they or you put it in make sure and check the wiring itself, or even ask before they do. Might save you some money.

well... another possibility that i forgot to mention yesterday is that you touched the probe on the oxygen sensor (touching it can cause it to read incorrectly or malfunction)
