Cam install question
Tuesday, June 21, 2005 9:40 AM
I`m finally putting the secret cams in my car now my main question and I have read and have printed out all the install procedure thanks to jbody NY. Do I absolutely have to remove the cam carrier from the head? can I not just swap the cams while the carriers have the tops off? maybe i`m missing something I do have the carrier gaskets so if I have to take it off I will. Also I`ll be doing the timing chain too any especially important tips on keeping the timing perfect, I kinow I have to mark the cam gears. Thanks cant wait to get going on this hope I can do it in under 6 hours.

Good news.

First, yeah, the housings the cams are in can stay. You'll have to replace the rubber ones, but the metal ones you don't need.

Second, you don't have to mark the gears. Actually, I don't recommend it, 'cause it that's how we tried to do it first time, and it just didn't go well.

When you take off your cam gears, you'll see a hole behind each one. It'll be located towards the bottom of where the gear was. Actually, I should say... I think there'll be 5 holes, I'm talking about the one not used for bolts.

Anyways, if you have the cam gear attached to the cams, you'll notice a very similar hole on the cam gear. If that hole and the hole on the housing line up, you're at TDC. How can you be sure? Luckily enough, the bolts that hold down the housing are that exact size. Shove one into each gear, and try to turn it. Obviously, you shouldn't be able to.

Then you just line up the notches on the crank, and you're golden.

I'm sure not all of that made sense, so just ask me if you have a question =)
