I have a 2k cavy 2.2 engine w/ cold air intake and catback dual 2.5 in exhaust. I am currently turning my car back to stock. The head is P&P"ed w/ stainless valves from Si and a 3 angled valve job. I know w/ that u need more in and outflow. So I was wondering if I could go to a single muffler exhaust and if that is a problem then could I just put a header, high flow cat and then the single muffler?? I just don't want the loud mufflers anymore. It isn't really that bad at all now but if I could get rid of one of those mufflers then it would be a lil quieter. I am out of the hobby now and wanna drive my car yr. round. B4 it was in a garage in the winter. Its a 2k and only has 40k miles on it. If anyone could help that would be great. I just want it to run right and not have problems or lose hp. Thanks

you can switch your exhaust to just 1 catback. your cat back starts after your high flow cat, so having a single 2.5 shouldn't hurt you much, as for the loud sound try having a resonator installed. with those you shouldn't lose any power, if any it shouldn't be much.
Truthfully you can't run your car stock and keep the power you have now. with what you have it isn't much but still to run stock you're gonna lose power. not trying to hate of anything.

if you dont want as much noise, cut down on pipe size as well as add resonators. which will increase exhaust velocity as well as absorb more noise.
guys with the gm supercharger are running 2.5 inch pipes. theres no way a 2.2 unless running forced induction or nitrous needs that large a pipe.
if you wanna stick with it, cool, but add some resonators cause sound bounces around inside pipes, especially when exhaust velocity slows down.
I have a catback exhaust. The resonator is still there. So I guess its a resonator-back exhaust!! LOL I know a lot about my car but if I go smaller it is going to restrict outflow, which in return will hurt the hp and maybe even the overall perf. of the car. I am keeping my cold air intake and I might just upgrade to a header -2.5in after header to the high flow cat- then 2.5 inch back to the single muffler. I guess I'll deal w/ the noise b/c I wanna keep the power. I know its a 2.2 but it is very zippy. I whooped up on my friends ecotec he had catback exhaust and CAI. I still pick on him about it. but on the subject of pipes, larger can give you higher hp numbers, but then again larger usually takes away low end puch or torque down low. so in a race of two similarly equipped cars, the car that makes more hp, isnt really all that effective in a race when the other guy already has a jump on you downlow and you try to pull out the win at the end...
hence the story of the tortise and the hare. or a bullet as an example.
shoot a bullet out of a cannon, you;ll get alot of visual, noise, and sound, and power (can stuff more powder in a cannon), but the bullet wont go far...
you get a pipe more suitable for the output, like a gun made for the bullet, the bullet travels fast and is more efficient
to large a pipe things exhaust flow slows down on low end, at WOT it speeds up a bit. so your low end is damaged.

now this is something i've heard a bunch of times before. a dual exhaust is louder? to me it doesnt make sense...if you have an extra muffler, usually it will quiet it down more than just having a single. i've seen and heard duals on a car with the same setup i have for a single and it is a bit quieter (same engine). maybe i'm missing something here. i just dont get why people want to
get rid of a muffler to make it quieter. ditch the stock resonator and add a better, straight through aftermarket one....or even two. that'll quiet down that drone you dont like and you still have the dual outlets you like (if you like duals)

I wouldn't imagine being that you have one more muffler it being any louder. It has more to do with the piping size and if there are resonators like Event said.

That is why I don't post on here anymore. I was asking some simple ?'s and got some stupid a$$ poems!! Just forget about it. I just don't understand (EVENT) why you couldn't just answer my questions. Yes I do know alot about cars but also there are things I don't know. Which that is why I enjoyed the hobby, to learn more about shi* like this. If you can't give a straight answer w/o being a immature BITC& then don't give one at all. they were examples that hopefully anyone who can sucessfully wipe their backside can figure out with using a visual.
