How much can a 2.4L be bored and stroked somewhat reliably?

Don't stroke it at all, and bored about .040... some have gone as far as .060, but I wouldn't.

whats a safe compression to run at .040 bore?

as long as the cylinder walls are thick enough you can do it. might want to keep an eye on the temp. gauge if your going .040 + over. but you could order .020 or .030 over at almost any parts store, as long as you don't need forged stuff that would be the most economical way to go. you can go as high compression as you like but the need for butterfly cut grooves for the valves and some race gas would be needed for 20 : 1

if you want to figure displacement.

.7854 x bore x bore x stroke x number of cylinders

or you could go the pi route in your math.
