I've heard it said so many times that speed = $$$$$, but those people need to go back to math class, because the formula is actually a bit more complicated than that. It's actually is more like this: Speed = (Thoughtful engineering+ingenuity+hard work+learning/studying about your exact application+doing your own wrenching+learning from other's and your own mistakes) $$$. So you see, the more you have inside the parenthisis, the less $$$ you will need. And the stuff you have inside the parenthisis is multiplied by the amount of money you have, not just added. For those who are unbelievers, let me show you my example....
Here is my list of mods, in the order they were done in with prices included and work involved.
1. K&N air filter --$35 easy install
2. Modified factory airbox --$0 just needed 5 minutes of my time and a drill with a 1/4" bit.
3. 56mm TB from the junkyard $20 later swapped out for the 59mm tb
4. Nitrous Works wet kit --$430 installed myself
5. NGK TR6 plugs --$6 for all 4 got a discount from a friend at A&A and installed them myself.
6. Spec Stage II clutch --$315 and installed myself
7. MSD RPM window switch, rpm modules, and tach driver --$172 installed myself
8. Stock tb bored out to 59mm --$0 had a friend do the machine work, and another friend laser out a plate for me for free. I did all prep work and reassembled and installed the tb.
9. Upper motor mount insert --$10 bought it from a friend who helped me install it on the spot.
10. Falken Azenis tires on 14" steelies --$50 bought from same friend who sold me the tires.
11. NOS brand bottle heater --$117 bought from the place I get my bottle filled
12. RK Sport lowering springs --$100 bought off ebay, maybe helped my 60' time a little so I'd better list it. Oh yea, installed myself.
13. 10Lbs of N20 --$38 This of course needs to be purchased over and over as you use it, but for all intents and purposes, it is considered a consumable product like gasoline, and I don't see anyone else including that in bang for the buck claims. I'll include the first fill though, since you need to fill it at least once to hit a 13 anyway.
So that brings the grand total to $1061 not including the first tb, since you could skip that step with the same results. Or if you really wanted to be a stickler, the figure would jump to $1099, which is still lower than the allotted budget. I understand that not all people are able to do all these things for themselves, but that's why the formual is still correct. The less you know/learn, and the less work you do yourself, the more money you will need.
Now for the performance end of this equation.....
Just how much performance am I getting for under $1100? Well, my best time to date with thes mods is a 13.974 @ 99.33 MPH. And that time was made the 2nd pass down the strip with this setup. I have some more work to do, fine tuning this combo and learning how to drive the car with this setup. Again, there is the other bits to the formula; hard work, and learning. I firmly believe I can cut this ET down to 13.8's and 13.7's fairly consistantly once I get it sorted out and make some more passes. Also note that this was done with no weight reduction except removal of the spare and jack. Much more gains could be seen with some free weight reduction, and you will be hearing from me on that at a later date. So for all you who said that it can't be done, I told you so!
great man now give some of that knowledge i have a 97 2.2 that have the throttle body that is part of the upper manifold what to do with it
Good times man.
just a little FYI....other people have done the same with the same amount of mods or less (speedracerz, mike jazz....among others... both 13.9's with 75 shot and minor bolt on's)
Still....excellent times. it only gets better from here.
congrats! sooo... where are you getting your free bottle fill-ups from?

HEH. true. But he does make some damned good points which I have lived by ever since I started this whole turbo business. Alot of people want their cars finished yesterday, and don't want to learn how or why to do it all. It's exactly that type of thinking that I feel leads to failure and empty wallets. Great job Nitro, keep it up and keep us posted.
good job,J
still though, gotta keep in mind in no way is 1100$ cheap. most people cant justify that much and always rely on shops.
weight reduction is the cheapest thing you can do, and still be fast..
I think Nitrous is a serious bunch of BS...
But who gives a @!#$. You broke 13's!
You coulda used a lucky rabbits foot and slicks and if you broke 13's thats all that mattered.

i'll admit it as well...
hell there are 18,000+ members here, and i know not many have even tapped 13's yet, most havent gotten 14's...
the fastest car with proof is only mid 12;s....
nice post.
why haven't you dremel ported your intakes, or at least gasket matched? that's an easy few hp. borrowing a friend's dremel is free, and the bits are only about 20 bucks worth if that for just one small intake like that.
also, some 14x3 or 4" aluminum spares from a junkyard would be good to save a few pounds and provide less rotating mass for front wheel(s).
what 60's you getting? drag radials would be a good idea on a moderately quick car. newer mustang gt's with drag radials can knock off up to 3 tenths, not bad! i'm not sure what FWD differentials can hold up to launch-wise though without breaking, maybe i'm wrong in saying that.
oh, and congrats. not bad for a 4cyl car like that... knocking off at least, what, 2 seconds and gaining 30 or more trap??
what shot of nitrous are you running???
Don't You Love the @$$Holes like Dustin Buchanan who tell you your 13 second vehicle is slow and not worth anything when his time slips are 15 seconders?
The Only Stupid Question Is The One You Don't Search For
Speed = (Thoughtful engineering+ingenuity+hard work+learning/studying about your exact application+doing your own wrenching+learning from other's and your own mistakes) $$$.
Heh..... one other thing. Your Own Mistakes = $$$

- Nitrous Express Kit..... 500 some odd dollars
- Goal = Custom turbo kit for 600 dollars or less
- 19 page thread about spitting or swallowing.....Priceless!
That is kinda wrong in a way...That's like that Jessie James "Monster Garage" After they're done spending all that money and time.....they get free paint($2000+) and wheels!!! ($1000+) Not exactly a budget, ya know!
I know that sounds a lil harsh, but out of the thousands of people on this site, not many can insall their own clutch, nitrous kit, etc. I know i can't!
Another thing is no everyone has friends that can give them things. Those friends are hard to come by.
I credit you with your times/ lack of $ spent. That is obviously no easy task, but it looks like you have a number of great resources on your hands! lol
Maybe it's just me, but i feel like we're being preached to as to how "easy" it is. Sorry if i'm coming off harsh. I don't mean to take away from your accomplishment. I congratulate you again! Wish i were in the 13s! lol
I had a feeling there would be alot controversy here, but I'm not bothered by it at all. I realize bottle fills cost money, that was even mentioned in my post. And if 13.9 isn't fast, then why all the threads in the other cars forum about these fast SRT-4's? I know I've done nothing new getting into the 13's with so few mods, but I've done it cheaper. And I realize not everyone can do there own work, that was also mentioned in my post. That's the reason for the complicated formula. And while everyone is not capable of doing their own work now, they can certainly learn and prepare to be able to do more than they do now in the future. And there are people who say they wish they were in the 13's but instead decide to spend all their money on visual mods. The same people say it's too much money to get a Cavalier to go fast that spend $1100 + to buy a body kit, cf hood, and paint for their cars, so you won't see sympathy from me there. I'm just trying to open people's mind to the reality of what is possible if you really want it, because let's face it; if performance is REALLY what you want, you will use all means possible to get it. I know what it's like to be on a tight budget, really I do. It took me a year and a half to save up the money it took to get me where I am. A year and a half of not going to the movies, not eating out, and not doing recreational things that cost alot of money. If you want it, there is a way to get it, period, and for me N20 was the only way to get into the 13's without taking out a loan, or having to save for 3 more years.
^^^^ good post
just hope u engine dont go south. but sounds like u have the right set up to run n20 safely and successfully.
speedracerZ made a post on how he got into the 12's with 2000$ in mods.
i like project cheap stuff. it is great.
( i am the opposite though with my set up)
well said Nitro
Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!
Easy slick.......you obviously don't have to prove yourself or your car to anyone. You made it to 13.xx and that's a great position to be at.
No hate from me.....keep moddin!

Well My boy SunCavi is running 14.1 at like 98 MPH and with like 2.4 60 " times.
He is running 7 PSI and people here on the ORG still tell him that he is slow and then get mad when he asks good questions about his motor and stuff.
They are telling him that he is not GOD and stuff even tho he never said he was.!!!
He is just running 10.5:1 compression adn 7 PSI and I guess people hate him because he is running high compression or something??

I'm not done saving my money! I've got to build an engine for when mine craps out, because eventually it will. That's what happens when you beat on them. Rick king put over 700 passes on his Ld9 before it fried, but it did fry. I'm hoping to be able to get an Ld9 from a junkyard and rebuild it with forged pistons, and possibly forged rods, depending on how the cost to durability ratio plays out with the forged rods vs. the stockers treated to a shot peening / polishing session and then fitted with ARP hardware. But that's gonna take a few more years unless the tb business takes off.....
.....unfortunately, I'll never be able to make a post about 12's for $2000, I know my limits, lol!
Oh, and Mike Theisler, nothing aimed at you bro! That's the nicest free body kit I've ever seen. That's in true cheap bastard fashion!
Eagle rods properly installed will take you far for not too much money.
