Odometer Problems
Sunday, September 18, 2005 11:54 AM
Ever since i got my '99 sunfire 6yrs ago, i've had problems with my Odometer. Getting all glitchy & everything, not showing the numbers properly, etc. I brought it to GM 4 times, and they changed the cluster each time (for free because it was under warranty). But, once i hit the 60,000km they refused to do anything about it, except for charging like a couple of thousand dollars for replacing it. my quick fix for it was to slam my hand down on the dash, and it would fix itself.

last week, the odometer has blacked out completely, and hasn't come back on. i was wondering if anyone else has ever had that problem, or if it's just me having bad luck.

also, is there somewhere i could find a cluster for pretty cheap, or an after-market cluster or something.

any help in regards to this would be greatly appreciated.

No after market clusters that I can think of, but you should hopefully be able to find a good deal on a replacement at http://ebay.com

no need for a cluster, remove your cluster, take out the bulb for the odometer backlight and solder in a new one, should only take about 20 minutes and less then a dollar

I am having this problem with my 2000 Z24, I'm am not sure what is causing it. I have noticed that when I push and hold the trip odometer in, I can read the milage. Otherwise I just slam my hand down on the cluster as you were doing. The backlight for the cluster is always on in my situation.

Someone once told me that there is a wire that runs from your transmission to your odometer. I am not sure if that is the case with j's, maybe look into that and check to see if it is loose or shorting out?

common problem due to crummy soldering job. a good smack on the top of the dash has always (temporarily) solved the problem for me.

well, i used to do the big smack on the dash, but that tactic stopped working. and, i'm not big enough of a car guy / mechanic to know how to replace a backlight by soldering it & stuff ... i noticed that ig the sun is shining directly on it, you can see the numbers, but that's it ... it's completely blacked out.

Yea mine don't work since I had a new deck put in. How hard is it to just change out the bulb without buying a new cluster?
