Hey guys I know a post was just recently made about wheel bearings but I couldn't find the answer I was looking for.
I just noticed last night while driving my car(97 Z24) that there is a humming sound that seems like it is coming from the front passenger side. It starts humming when you get up to normal speed...35mph or so and you can hear it there after. The noise gets louder and softer as the car rides over dips in the road and as the suspension goes up and down.....BUT....here is the biggest thing....when I am making a long left curve the noise is really noticable but when I do the same to the right there is no noise. For example I was driving at 60mph and was following the road to the left and a constant hummmmmm...then when the road when to the right it was smooth as can be.
Could this be a wheel bearing?
When I bought my car a coupkle weeks ago it hummed when ever I turned my wheels to the left as well and it got louder the faster I went. I got the guy whom I bought the car from to fix it(he said he would) and it was the wheel bearing on the passengers side. Hope that help you out a little.
It
sounds like a wheel bearing. It makes the sound when you turn one way because it puts more stress on the side that's bad when you turn. So in theory when you turn the car left and you hear the sound it *might* be the right bearing that went. I could be wrong

Thanks for the input guys. So how difficult is it then to replace a front wheel bearing? I have only done it on RWD GM cars.

It can be.. you need a big socket to get the big nut off that holds the hub on. It can also sometimes come loose, so you can check this with a torque wrench.
Before you do anything though, jack the car up and pull the wheel outwards and push it back in quickly a few times repeatedly to see if you get much movement, because that's what will happen when your bearing is done.
I get the same hummin sound while driving straight. My friend has an 01 cavy and does the same sound but I think his is louder. I had a buick regal before and had a bad bearing but that hummin sound was way worst than my cavy. By the way does anybody know the size of the socket to get the axle nut out? is it a 32mm or a 34mm?

1) Take wheel off
2) remove Caliper
3) remove caliper bracket
4) remove rotor
5) Remove hub assembly
6) Pry out old wheel bearing
7) hammer in new bearing
8) put back together

It is a wheel bearing hub assembly on this car. So in the above instructions when you remove the three torx screws you will remove the hub assembly ... no need to hammer in or pry out any bearing.
Its 100% definitely the bearing. Change em both ...
