Temperature climbing when stopped.
Saturday, August 27, 2005 10:05 AM
Hello again everyone,

I am not sure if this is related to my earlier post, or if this is something new and unrelated.

I noticed yesterday as I was sitting in traffic, the temperature of my car started climbing. Once I was able to get going again, the engine cooled off and went back to its normal temperature.

I thought that maybe my fan wasn't turning on, so I let the car idle in the driveway. I turned the A/C on and the fan started right up.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what this could be?

It's fine. Your car will start to run hot as you sit in traffic. As the temp approaches the 3/4 mark, the fan should turn on until it can cool it back off. I seriously doubt there is a problem with your thermostat. As long as that needle doesn't go into the red mark and your fan will turn on automatically, without turning on the a/c, I wouldn't worry.

in LONG periods of traffic (or idle), it should climb. it SHOULDN'T go past 3/4 though.

/\ /\ /\ what he said. The fans don't kick on untill about 220 or so. So when you look at your gauge and its over the 195 mark don't sweat it untill it hits the red.

Semper Fi SAINT. May you rest in peace.

Yeah, it's normal. The engine cools down by the flow of air thru the radiatior. If the car isn't moving, it is obviously going to heat up, since there isn't any air going thru the rad.

If it OVERHEATS, then that's a problem. But for the needle to move up a couple of notches before the fan kicks in... that's exact how it's supposed to work.

BTW, the fan will come on with the A/C all the time... regardless of current engine temp... but hey, at least you know the fan works now right?
