Just picked up a 96 Sunfire that is in good shape. Has the 2.2L engine with 105,900 miles. I was reading through some of these post and these sound like very good cars. I just changed the oil using 4.5 quarts of Pennzoil 5w30 and a AC Delco PF-47 oil filter. The car runs very well. I was thinking of driving this car to Florida. With the mileage over 105,000 do I have to worry about a timing chain failing? Is it common for the timing chain to fail on these cars?? Also the car does have a slight tick when it is first started up but from what I hear this is normal. Also I notice that my Sunfire uses/leaks no oil. I had a Ford that would use/leak a little bit of oil. Do the Sunfires use/leak oil as the mileage goes up?? With proper care how many miles can the Sunfire 2.2L engine go?

I'd honestly get a mechanic to check things out. or use your maintainance manual and go through just about anything. My car has 90k on it and all i've had wrong with it were coolant issues. with 100k check your power steering, coolant, transmission fluids. Also has your head gasket ever been replaced before?

with buying a car with that many miles on it, you just don' t know. It could last you another 100k or die tomorrow. there's no guarantee.

174,000 miles on mine. Runs great, regular oil changes, and we visit the redline a couple times a week. No oil burning/loss that I can tell. Just had the rear seal done. Timeing chain was done on mine about 110,000-115,000. Mechanic said it was slightly stretched--not severe to do any damage, but was good preventive maintenance.
