Problem With my Lugnut
Tuesday, August 02, 2005 4:15 PM
Yesterday, I was taking off my tire to paint my brake calipers, and one of the lugnuts would not come off. It was stuck. I kept trying to loosen it up, and eventually I heard a snap. The lug nut kind of fell out, and I looked at it. The bolt thing that it screwed onto, had broken off, with half of it stuck in the lug nut. I was just wondering how big of a problem this is? Could I drive my car with 4 out of 5 lug nuts secure? How much would it cost to fix this?

I'm just curious, I haven't driven the car yet...

Yes you can but 5 are better then 4. Is it the front or rear? You didn't say. Its not likly to cause you any problems but its just a good idea to fix it anyway . Cause if you break another one THEN your screwed.

Semper Fi SAINT. May you rest in peace.

i drove around missing one from the rear forever, i knew i shouldn't but at the time it was not a priority of mine to fix. i even had one to replace it with for 3 or 4 months before i did do it. not recommended at all and i would consider doing it faster since it sounds like a front since you mentioned calipers and i did not see a rear conversion in your profile.

You need to get a new wheel stud. You can probably get one from the dealer for like $1 hah. Anyways, on my other car it was a piece of cake. Take off the wheel, take off the rotor, hit the broken stud with a hammer, it falls out, put one one in, replace rotor/caliper, replace wheel and tighten down.

However, I don't think on a j-body it's that easy. I can't exactly remeber the steps to doing it on a J, but do a search for wheel stud replacement. Hope this helps.

I did a DIY write up on this in this same forum. Use the search button, and it'll tell you how to do it.......actually, I'll save you the trouble, but in the future, use the search button, please.

Ahhh, thanks everyone. And yes, it was the rear right tire. I will get around to replacing it within a week then.

Thanks again

Do yourself a favor and torque your lug nuts down(100 ft lbs) so that you don't over tighten them and have this problem again.

BTW:

If you dont have the nfity little tool, a basic C clamp works just as well.

I wont need one to remove the drum will I? The stud broke on the rear right tire, it doesn't have a caliper.

Make sure you either apply WD-40 or some anti-seize on the studs when you put your tires back on...it will help to keep this from happening again.

you gotta take the cover off the drum.....a hammer, some cursing, and some beer, and a bigger hammer works well...........at least it did on my grand am

just beat that mofo till it loosens then slide off the cover
