Plugs didn't really help the sound but smoothed out the car and right on throttle response now. I run Mobil 1 Synthetic 5w-30 and have since around 15,000 miles. Im at 42,000 now.
I don't know what you guys are talking about...I'm using Royal Purple, STP Fuel Cleaner (every tank), STP Fuel Injector cleaner (every 6k miles), and I change the oil early. I've had no engine troubles at all (24,000 here I come). I don't race the engine much, but when I do, the Eco gets loud. It's very quiet at idle, in the cold I notice it more, but then again, maybe my senses are just overloaded.

Gas mileage is still 30 city, 34 highway...I dunno what's wrong with your cars, but 30 miles off per tank isn't a horrible drop. It's better than 50-60
I used to use Mobil 1, even with the Mobil 1 it didn't make any noises but after I Switched to Red line 5w30 oil, the engine ran a lot smoother ($7.00 a qaurt) really great quality.
It took almost 2000 miles for it to turn a medium brown,
Mobil 1 turns @!#$ brown after about 1500.

I also put in Lucas Synthetic oil stabilizer, thats really GREAT stuff too.
I purchased all this at Advanced Auto parts.

I get that ticking noise too 03 cav but bought it like that certified used vehicle from gm dealership got it with 24,000 miles if it was a problem i dont think it would pass certification, i use mobil1 5w-30 since i got it, it now it has 31,000 miles. the engine gets loud when cold but i always warm it up like 5 minutes in cold weather when the engine is cold. i also use 91 octane i dont notice the ticking as much when i got it, or maybe i just got used to it. if its the same noise i get i think you should be fine. Mine starts getting loud after around 3000 rpm. since mine came like that i never thought it was a problem i kinda of like it but you never know.

Valve guides?

It seems as if the Eco has a chronic valve problem. It is okay for an engine to tick a little bit when it's cold, those are just the lifters. If it ticks anytime else, it could be a problem. I don't have an Eco so I can't say much, though. Hope you guys get it sorted out!

Yup I got the same ticking in my 02 ECO. It started at about 38k and has remained the same (I have 49k on it now) It only does it for about 30 seconds to a minute after starting the car, and I haven't notice any diff in the performance or gas milage, but it is pretty annoying. When I get some more time I'm gonna take the head apart and investigate it further.....

I may have found a cure. Try tightening down the intake manifold bolts. Mine were a little less than snug with a 3\8 drive ratchet, 10mm socket, extension, and elbow to get at the hard to reach ones. I did this and mine quit making the ticking noises.

Hmmm thats a weird cure not sure how it would cause ticking, but what the hell I'll give it a try, cause I know I've had my manifold off many times, so may be one of the bolts or nuts is loose.....

listening...........similar prob. Ticks only when cold. The day I picked it up the dealer started it and I asked what the hell is that noise. "Oh that is normal, it is just because it is cold and it is a Aluminum engine". OK...............(in my head I was thinking, I have warranty). Then I took off.
all engines make more noise when cold, think about your started an engine with all the oil drained into the pan, its metal on metal. Once the oil heats up noises usually go away. My sound liek its dieing when its cold. once it warms up it makes some noise still. the pulley makes it sound almost supercharged and the cams make a nice lopey idle
If you use Synthetic oil there should not be any metel to metal contact. Especially if you used Lucas sythetic oil stabilizer. That stuff works GREAT!! Not all the oil settles in the pan.

i dont notice a ticking with mine. yes the lucas oil stab. does kick @!#$. i work at advance auto and i pretty much recomend it to everyone thats doing an oil change. depends on what kinda car and mileage though. the only noises that i have noticed is the clunk/thud/clanking kinda noise over bumps, while braking, and turning. also my power steering makes a horrible noise every now and then. i didnt notice this until it started getting cold. but i let the car run for a good 15-20 minutes before i drive it in the morning. im not a big fan of putting my 3 month old into a cold car. any way the steering noise sounds like the pump has no fluid. it wierd. any ideas on this? plus my gas mileage totally sucks. i mean less then 20mpg in the city. according to star pontiac this is normal, but i doubt it. i am a mechanic, i have worked on many cars. none of which had gas mileage this crappy. my dads dodge ram 1500 5.2 auto gets better gas mileage then i do. thats pretty bad. my friends 03 mach 1 stang gets better mileage then i do and his car has an extreme amount of mods done to it. all of which are dealer installed mods. any ideas on this as well?

Well I found what was causing the ticking on start-up and under throttle (around 2 to 3 k) when cold. It was actaully a very small exhaust leak in the flex pipe, but because of the metel shroud over it there was no tell-tale sign of carbon. But after some close looking I found that when the engine moved in towards the back of the bay (when cold), it made the ticking sound. Basically when the car was started the engine would rock allowing a small crack in the flex joint to open the same thing when under throttle, but once the engine along with the cat warmed up I'm guess that the metel expands enough to somewhat seal the crack, lol. Anyhow I'm thinking that this was probably caused by the ECOs very soft upper mount which allows the engine to rock alot in the bay putting added stress on the flex pipe, combine that with a hard driven 5spd or auto equiped with a stall of autotran-interceptor, and a leak in the flex pipe could be a very common prob..........

Ditto here...Well, I only have 17,000 miles...But no engine problems what-so-ever... I have only had to have cord for AC controls replaced(were sticking and defrost did not work...common Cavy problem) and one exhaust bracket replaced (rattling)...My dad is a GM mechanic, so I'll ask him about the ticking and post tomorrow nite if I get the chance...
that actually makes sense, cause on mine u can only hear in D , not in Park.
I am taking mine in to the dealer in about two weeks, so I'll see what they say.

Mine does the same thing it started doing so at around 50k miles. I now have 77k miles on it . I now have lower gas mileage and now all of a sudden my car decides it doesn't like to fire right for some reason. Taking it to the shop within the next couple of days hope they can fix it for a decent price. It is definitley nice to know that we are mostly in the boat together.
Anyone noticing these problems happening after the ECU flash recall. I don't know about u guys but after the flash was done for my car it seems to surge a little and gas mileage reduces. It fixs the stall problem but I doubt that the other problems which occurred simultaneously occurred out of coincidence. Thats my 2 cents
Re: ECOTEC engine noises

I didn't notice any change in mpg after getting the flash done..

I've always only gotten like 250-280 miles to a tank though since I bought the car (this was all highway 50 mile/roundtrip) , mine seems a little noiser since my waterpump was changed.. i may end up taking it back in and having them look at it again..
