i have a 99, 2200, 3 speed, 240xxx miles on it. the best i am getting out of the car is 21-22 mpg. i have read in other posts that people are getting closer to 30 mpg. what the hell is wrong with my car? i have tried new plugs, wires, iat sensor, O2 sensor, regular oil changes, running about 40 psi in the tires. nothing has changed, still getting 22 mpg. anybody have any ideas?

Is that only highway? You do have a lot of miles...you won't get the same as the car should get new...check your air filter

It's mostly 50 mph to work and back, and its a new intake and filter

Lol, yea...big problem there.

If you have access to a scan tool, look at your long term fuel trim. Let us know what you get for a number.

i hated my ohv 3 speed omg, ridiculous difference between that and my ecos mpg. and my ohv 3 speed had intake, msd coil packs, accel 300+ wires, ac delco platinum plugs, 2.25" catback with cherry bomb turbo muffler, "the big 3". always maintaned with fresh fluids etc, changed out wheels but still running 14" wheels/tires, saw about 25-26 mpg average, imo thats pathetic for a small car and engine like that as i average 38mpg in auto ecotec sedan with staying below 3k rpms on average drives. the 3 speeds just suck.

Did you notice a difference with the msd coils?

isnt there some kind of solenoid on the 3sp tranny thats notorious for going out? and if unplugged gas milage will go down?

idk f it was just from fhe coil packs, becuase i installed the accel wires, msd coil packs, new ac delco platinum plugs and the big 3 at the same time. but after everything it did pick up a few mpg but nothing spectacular

Do the coils break down over time? Cause as far as I know, they are original. Would new ones help anything?

I have a 97 2.2 with the 3 speed auto... with 283K miles. This past weekend, I took it on a 400 mile road trip. The speed limits were 65-70 (more 70 than 65), and I was cruising around 10 over the whole time (no cruise control really sucks on long trips). I averaged just under 30 MPG that trip, like 29.7. That was also with the AC on. I can go out and look at my receipt, but I'm too lazy. I track my mileage on every tank. A bad, in town tank with me driving like a race car driver is in the 23-24 MPG range. Best ever was 31. On my daily commute (9 miles highway, 6 miles 45 MPH road with a few stops), I average 27ish. So yeah, I'd say something is wrong with your car.

i have 2000 2.2 and a 3 speed auto and am always avg over 30 mpg! right now i am at 217,000 miles so you gotta be leaking gas or something to avg out 21 mpg.... i drove an avg of 80 mph so 70-95 mph and was surprised with getting 31 mpg! for 1,500 miles i have an ultra gauge to keep track of mileage and all

Yeah, check that round plug-in on the front of your transmission...Thats for your torque converter...My buddy had a 1998 Sunfire with the 3speed. He unplugged it and he said he gained some torque, but his gas mileage went down alot. Only thing i can think of...
