Starter problem...
Monday, March 05, 2012 7:07 PM
Well, I go to turn my car on and it won't start... I turn the key to ignition and everything turns on like normal... but you go to turn the key, and nothing... the engine won't crank... and this happens anywheres from 2-12+ times, then it will crank like normal and the thing will start...

I've replaced the starter relay, the ignition switch, reset the positive battery cable...

Is the starter failing? Is there something I don't know? 2002 Cavalier, Manual, 2200 SFI

The next time it will not start, try taking a long screw driver place on top of starter and tap it LIGHTLY,then try to start.Make sure your key is OFF, tap, try.Just a quick try thing and if it does start your starter may have a dead spot on the solenoid, and just replace the whole part not just the solenoid.I might even suggest take the starter off and get it bench tested at advance auto or auto zone for free.Unless there is another electrical issue ground cables, alternator I say you probably have a bad or worn starter.Btw is this the original or even if not starters today are not worth a sh!@ reman garbage and that is my suggestion.Hope this helps and granted I know more on the older stuff your symptoms are relivant on new/old js regardless.

not even the sound of the solenoid?

Some people tap the starter with something and then it starts. I don't know where to tap it and what they tap it with.
Have you had the free battery/alternator/wires test?
It could be the starter though.

Do they put the starter under a load when they test it? I had a starter that would work fine without a load on it.
