well where the metal pipe and the t-stat housing come together they are set in place at the factory.
The leak was coming from a small pin sized hole from the metal pipe being pushed forward. I'm going to try to use the stock tstat housing and get that bent by someone, but I would have to say this probably doesn't look like an easy job to get the housing off. Any advice on removing/installing the housing?

Can you just have that pin hole tack welded and call it a day? I herd that car has 30k miles with that turbo setup. Just take the downpipe off and put a dimple in it where it touches the water line. Then have the water line with the pin hole in it welded.

isn't the housing aluminum? and if it were to get heated up by the welder the seal would be shot in that pipe?

I'm going to bend the Dp tomorrow and see where that gets me...if anywhere

I know that the thermostat housing is aluminum but i highly doubt that the outlet tube it aluminum. All it would take is just a quick tack to seal it again.

Are you talking Mig or Tig weld...
I'd like to know for final if that housing is aluminum or iron.

If you want to know for your self go and get a small magnet. Magnets don't stick to aluminum. Then try sticking it to the tube coming out of the housing.

ah yes good idea. I'll find out more tomorrow as I work on it.
I've yet to get a nut for the downpipe it was missing, and i have to get the DP off yet, i've got the car up on blocks of wood right now.

5-days out of commission for this.

Haha. Seriously? Pull the housing off, repair and mod it, put back on and enjoy the dead-balls reliability of this car. This post looks rediculous.

So you are actually gonna bend the downpipe???
Ever thought what that will do to flow since its coming right out of the turbo?

Sheesh, some peoples kids.

You don't have to "bend" or "crush" the down pipe at all.. Just put a quarter size dimple in it right where it meets the water neck on the thermostat housing. The opening on the exhaust housing side of the turbo is 2 1/4" and with a 2 1/2" down pipe a slight dimple in the pipe will not harm performance at all..

No, dont touch the exhaust. There really isnt any reason to.

UPDATE:
It stopped leaking so the coolant system sealing tabs must have done the job.

So quit ripping on me about the idea of bending the pipe....

Those wont workj for long.
Whatever you do, leave the downpipe alone.

Get some neosporin and put a band-aid on it. All better..

Seriously though something has to be done. Why do you think there is that nut missing. As soon as you put a nut on that and tighten it down its gonna hit that water neck even more and harder. The correct way to fix this problem is too have Brandonson make you a new down pipe. That pipe looks like it seen better days anyhow. If you need Brandonson's e-mail of phone number let me know.

I'll take his email address, just to quote a DP out and see what can be done. I just drove it about 100 miles today w/o any issues.

This thread goes further south.

If the downpipe moved that much further inward when tightening it down it'd be leaking like hell right now.

Yeah, it didn't move at all it was just missing a nut, so i put one on, and have been driving it for the past week without any issues.

please tell me you are not relying on a stop leak tablet

Alright, as I said before, well a while ago. It is leaking a small amount, but just enough to get my concern, because I want this thing in top condition.

Out of a few opinions, I'm not sure if I should just replace the entire tstat housing or just go with a new downpipe. Right now I'm turning towards the new tstat housing, but wouldn't this problem arise again someday, if it did on this housing already. This is such a damn confusing situation....

If your motor is moving and that's causing a problem. Look into some motor mounts.

When I had that turbo on my car, I cut and extended my coolant lines in that area to clear my downpipe. I never had an issue with it.
