Check engine light codes, how to fix?
Thursday, July 24, 2008 5:11 PM
Ok, I've got an '00 Z24, and my check engine light has been on for awhile. I got it checked before, and was told by a friend that is was my gas cap. Bought a new one, check engine light didn't go off. I got it tested at AutoZone today, and now it's throwing two codes, one for an emission sensor, and another for the cooling fan relay. I have the codes printed out at home, I will reply later since I know that they will be needed. Also, the Trac Off light is constantly on, even in 4th/overdrive. The car doesn't drive any different than it did before, and I say that because I searched online and came up with people who had been having transmission issues w/ the Trac Off light on, mine doesn't do that. The only difference I've noticed, is if I get on it from a dead stop the tires spin a little more (obviously... Traction Control is off..). The Trac light came on and stayed on after I drove through a large puddle caused by a local downpour a few weeks back. Will it hurt the car in any way if I can't get it fixed immediately, and what might be the cause of it? Any tips will be appreciated, thanks!

The codes that my car is showing are: PO480 (Cooling Fan primary circuit condition, cooling fan relay defective) and PO452 (fuel tank pressure sensor condition, fuel tank pressure sensor defective). It tells me to check the connector and wiring for both, and also the hoses and fittings for code PO452. What side effects will either of these cause if not fixed right away? The car seems to drive fine, doesn't overheat, and I'm consistently getting 28-30mpg. Again, if anyone can help me out with this I'd appreciate it.

the only side effect being (if the fan isnt coming on) is overheating while sitting in traffic, and not passing emissions if you have testing in your area.

it doesn't overheat, but how can I check the fan to make sure it comes on? I am not sure if I can hear it kicking in or not, since there is some suspension noise I'm trying to figure out as well but that's a different sound. The car never goes over the middle line on the temperature gauge, no matter how long I let it sit in the humid weather here running. I'm still new to the J Body platform, what other issues are common to 2000 Cavaliers, (Z24 LD9 equipped cars mainly) ?

Turn on your A/C, popp your hood and see if the fan is running. Fan should always be on while A/C is running.

if the check engine light is on, so too should be the fan.

Not always. Only certain codes will do this. Bad IAT, or disconnected IAT will, but not every code. If he has a evap code it will not be on.

i have an evap code, my fan runs constantly. i clear the code, fan goes off. yes, certain codes trigger the fan, but those certain codes account for 98.9% of the possible codes.
