I have a 2.4L with a 5 speed (2002)
i spun a rod bearing, and need to have the engine gone over, so i am in the process of pulling the whole thing as we speak...
I am to the point now where i need to decide if i am going to disconnect the tranny and pull it out too... or if i should try to seperate them in the engine bay and pull the block out alone.
My buddy said he did it on an older v6 Z24, and said it was a piece of cake to pull the engine alone and leave tranny in place... but that is a whole different engine and a different car.
I dont even know if i have enough room in the engine bay to disconnect the 2 in the car. Someone help me out here. what do you suggest?
Up to you, I see no issue leaving the trans in the car.
Will be doing such on Friday, 2.4l coming out through the top, tranny staying in.
Removing crank pulley and the full lower mount assembly shall assist you greatly from my understanding.
I have pulled a few 2.4's all from the top. I have done it both ways.If you have a good cherry picker that has a leveler on it makes life easy. Just think if there is any chance you will be doing tranny upgrades during this build, or painting the engine bay might want to yank the tranny as well.
FU Tuning
ok...
so if i am pulling the tranny too, i assume i just disconnect everything, and then loosen the CV boots near the tranny and let the axle shafts drop out as i pull it out?
and if i leave tranny in.... i assume i just disconnect all the bell housing bolts... and leave tranny mounts in place... and just slowly raise engine at an angle till it slides out of the tranny?
or is there more to either?
i have pulled my engine 3 times now and have left my tranny on everytime, i thought it was really easy that way. you just need to take your axles out and take off the shift linkages and 2 plugs on the tranny. its not hard, but a good equalizer really does come in handy.

I always find it easier to split the engine and tranny on the garage floor....
you have to get them apart before attempting to remove the engine with out the tranny....not just take the bols out & let her rip.
It can be done either way, but I like to take the tranny out as well. I personally find it to be easier, and plus, this way you can jam an LSD in there....
I would LOVE to jam an LSD in there.... but the only person i know of that has them hasnt returned any of my messages.
Anyone else know where to get them?
Also, do you guys use the 2 lift points to pull the engine? (one on passenger engine mount and one on exhaust cam tower) or are there better places/ways? wil these 2 points work for the tranny too? or does the tranny need a chain on it somehow?
Team green is the best bang for the buck from what I have heard....but they're out of stock, and no one knows when they're making more....check the tranny forum, I think there was a thread about them.
You can also do phantom grip, or OBX....flying squirl has a nice summary of turning the OBX lsd into a very nice unit. Or you can talk to Karo, he carries some....but his site is down in rememberance of the Armenian Genocide, and wont be back up til tomorrow...
The ones he carries are crazy expensive, and the one OBX tries to copy.
Just a couple options for you.
yeah team green is who i have been trying to reach.
i didnt know anyone else made them... how much do they cost? and what is "crazy expencive"
I know it cant be any more than the differential for my jeep... that is CRAZY expensive...
The ones Karo has are upwards of $1100 if I remember correctly. That is crazy expensive...but the best unit on he market. And if anyone knows that the price is wrong, please correct me....like I said earler his sites are down today....so I can't grab a price off his website.
Phantom grips are around the $300 range for the upgraded spring package. (this is the same style as team green)
OBX....check E-bay, and see what they are going for.(this is the coalife (dont know if I spelled that right) style that Karo sells), but read flyin squirls write up on them.
youch!!! i found a LSD for the Z on drivetrain.com... $625!!!! goodness gracious!!!!!!
i found a "phantom grip" for $270... a bunch for $300+
and then a few other places make their own full diff's mantapart, and a few others sell whole units, not just an insert... but they all seem to START at $750

I think the $300 range is as much as i would want to spend on one... this isnt an all out drag car... actually it is hardly ever a drag car... just more of a fun driver.... but LSD would really help in the winters up here... extra traction never hurts anyone....
so on to the phantom-grip springs.... i see there are like 3 different spring choices... i assume the heavier the spring the quicker it will "lock" on you?
(i am no stranger to differentials... i am primarily a jeep/off road guy...)
so i assume the stock springs just dont grab enough to notice a difference? but i assume the super heavy springs probably work real well for going straight, but make turning a pain in the rear...
so the middle ones are pretty good for a fun daily driver?
i cant find much on the OBX ones... are these the "insert" style like phantom? or are they a full differential like the better units?
do any other cars use a getrag 5 speed that would have the same diff?
there is nothing on ebay for my car... they have them for the cobalts, and for 2002+ cavaliers with the F23... but nothing for mine.
Is the OBX better than the phantom with springs?
how hard is it to install these?
Are you expirienced in tranny work?
If you get the case split, it is not impossible, but the less you know about tranny's, the harder it is.
the obx is a full replacement, but I cant find any on the e-gay like I normally do....I see plenty of phantom grips though...I think I paid less than whats on e-bay for mine.
The OBX's are over your $300 budget, they are about $400+

That should help make up your mind.
