could my voltmeter twitching mean a bad alternator?
Monday, April 21, 2008 9:25 AM
just recently my car started idling high. I replaced the IAC, the TPS, and I am about to replace the MAP sensor. I checked my intake manifold gasket and it seems to be good. My throttle body is not sticky. Sometimes when I would give it a quick rev, the engine almost sputtered out and then revved. It didn't do that today though. Then I noticed that my voltmeter was twitching irregularly from 13.9 to 14. It has never done this before. I was wondering if a bad alternator could be causing my idle problem?

I say its normal operation. The volt gauge on my airride controller always reads between 13.9 and 14.1. As long as the voltage doesnt drop consistently low(like 12, 11, or something) your alternator is fine.

The only way i can think of for your alternator to affect your idle is if it is seized, but you would know if it was do to a very low voltage reading and the belt squealing on the pulley.

I think it was the idle air control sensor, I think all I had to do was disconnect my battery to reset my computers. Now my car is working fine and the voltmeter is normal
