Well the good news is one day, we'll have a program like Hondata and then the true performance of the J world will be told! I think that is our limit right now and the reason for so much hate on the J! It cost hella dollars to mod a car that you have to get stand alone for on top of the turbo!!
For me, I found the price was right at the time and seemed lots and lots of talk was going around about the Ecotec engine. Figured why not...plus I had no desire for a civic. An RSX was on the slate to buy, but with rebates and all...$12K for a 2002 LS Sport was too much to pass up!
Locally this past year (now I'm in Germany but...), I turned more heads at shows than any car I think! Won 2 shows out right and was the talk at the others. Germans don't understand how an Ecotec (found in the Opel) is in a Chevy! The other shows were German so not likely for an American to win to be honest! Guess you have to be here to understand that one!
Just this past week, NRHA drivers and car owners came to our base (I'm in the military) to sign autographs and all and there were some damn nice cars there for the show! But everyone, including the other car owners came to see the little Cavalier! I heard more than once..."that's a Cavalier!" One guy even said "Cavalier, they have like one hub cap, that's not a Cavalier!" Another show this past year (American) the judge walked away and said "damn...that's a Cavalier!"
So, I'm proud to have my Cavy, damn proud! No it's not the fastest out there, by far not the fastest. But when done right, it can turn heads because it's not expected. That's the difference! Soon though, we'll start turning heads for our street performance, not just the track, very soon!!
Eh...old man with a Corvette now...it was bound to happen sooner rather than later right?
The thing is we do have something like hondat now its not a plug an play buuut it does control everything you could ever need and its a hair above 200 dollars. Its a great tool for boosted. but Im glad things are working for you.

bottom line, if people laugh at you, prob not your friends, if they are, then they are prob the stereotypical tuners...
its not cool to mod unless said magazine said so, or leader of group.
real car enthusiasts respect all cars, no matter engine size, car maker, model, year, color, sticker or whatever.
you dont necessarily have to agree with the choice, but you still respect their motivation.
These tuner people piss me off to no extent. Its usually people with the decently modded Civic's or Eclipse's too. If you see a guy with a Stingray, or an Old Mustang, etc. They'll be totally cool, they'll usually tell you what they did to it, stats, etc and be proud of their work. This guy came into my work with a 500hp Nova, and we were talking about it for like 10-minutes, he asked what i drove and I pointed it out to him and he didn't question, didn't make fun, he goes "Oh, a Cavalier eh? Everyone has to have something to work with, what else you doing to it?". I thuoght it was totally cool.
Now if you ask a tuner guy something, they'll usually just give you @!#$ about it. I remember a few months ago I was at this park with my friend and this badass Eclipse pulled up. Had a bodykit on it, rims, spoiler, etc. Looked pretty cool. Were looking at it from a distance, and then we see the guy. Looked like he was 16/17 (go fgure). I turn around and walk up a tad, and say "kick ass car". The guy looks over with this attitude and goes "yea, you wanna @!#$in race?". At this point I'm lost, and he goes "if not, then stop @!#$in staring". I walk up to him by his car and say "excuse me". Typical teen attitude goes "You @!#$in heard me". Me being the a**hole I am, boot his door putting this massive dent in it and stare him down. Kid looks like he was going to bal his eyes out, I turn around and walk away back to my car with my friend and he just gets in his car and hauls ass out of there.
Whats the moral of the story? If these tuner people could be half as nice or as cool as DECENT people, we wouldn't have problems modding our J's. Thats why I'm damn glad I didn't get a Civic or an Eclipse. I like standing out with something you wouldn't expect.

OK, no matter what the guy's attitude is, you shouldn't have touched his car. Sounds like you're the one with the attitude problem. Booting his car, just because he's an @$$. That's pretty low man.

my first ever street race was with a 96 esclipe gs. i don't know what he had in it. but he thought he had it in the bag. but he was being a show and he had to smoke em up before the race. he had street tires so i was like ....ok..... then when we took off i pulled head first. he DNF. blow his clutch up. i only had a window sticker, fog lights, vent visors at the time.
then a guy with a zx3 who got me to race buy mocking me and my car. i beat him by three or so car lengths. he had AI and exhust. he was like "wow i didn't know that cavaliers are then fast" . i said "yep its got the ecotec in it."( i have a 04 5-speed) i wasn't going to race just watch. but all my friends kept saying you have the fastest car out of all of us. i didn't believe it till i race him myself.
the one event i autoxed in i didn't go all that well.
who gives a f uck what people say, f uck them... i got sick of people talking s hit i learned to not give a f uck.... people say s hit bout my car all the time, it goes it 1 ear and out the other.... cuz in the end what are they driving? a civic? a integra? a prelude? a sentra? a eclipse? somekind of gay ass toyota?
if somebody rolls up in a ferrari and talks @!#$ i might listen... but f uck all them import loving fanboys... all i can say is please get off the T-I-P of my dick..... and i do have pride in my Z24, thats why its stored and thats why its clean everytime i drive it....

So I was at work today sitting in one of the side stations and drinking a glass of sprite when one of my co workers comes up and says so what do you do for fun and I say build cars. well of course the next question is what do you drive and imeeditaly I think of this post so test my theroy I try out a bit of an experiment the results may shock you
First I say a turbo cavailer and tell him Im running 300WHP and running drag radials an low 12's
Take a guess what he says. wow I wouldnt be to proud of that. He didnt hear anything past a cavalier. I cant @!#$ stand this @!#$ I have officaly come to the conclusion that no matter what you do with your car there are always going to be @!#$s it just pissies me off.

He shouldn't have started s*it with me in the first place. I was being all nice and compliment the guy, and he goes off with attitude for no reason. Wanting to race, and telling me to stop staring, etc. There was no call for it. I didn't have an attitude until he started with me. His fault, not mine
yeah i know what you all mean, just no respecty for our poor cavaliers, not that it matters though. Like people have said, it dosent matter if you run 12;s people will stay say but its just a cavalier . People should say that about the honda's, and tegras, and all four popper cars for that matter =P
Off topic a bit but I think it relates to this thread ... (sorry it's long!)
Anyway, I have a friend who has a 2002 35th Anniv, Camaro SS. It has the LS1 in it and runs decent a the track...high 13s. Anyway, he and a few of his F-Body friends ride the coat tails of another Camaro, fully built nitrous car running 10s (Street driven too!) They talk smack about everyone's car, I mean everyones car since no one here (in Germany) can out run him at the track. To them, the F body is the only car worth modding!
It doesn't matter what you run either, 16s, 15s, 14s, 13s, 12s, or even 11s!! All they talk about when he is around is his car and how fast it is. No respect towards anything else out there. Even a few 4 bangers here that are running 13s! They have even called me a ricer...not my friend but the rest of that crowd has.
That's where I think this relates...how many Js are out there day in and day out running solid 12s like some of the more popular rides? I'm talking about street cars too, not track only. Not many to be honest! That's where no respect comes in, we just don't have solid 12 second rides running around all over the place.
Everyone in the tuner world (seriously in the scene!) does know someone with a fast car. They ride the tails of that ride and think it's the only car worth modding. I've got clubs I've been with and they are the same way. You hang on to what you know is fast and back it...it's what is expected. People are always going to be that way.
One thing about the J though that I do notice is the looks. I go to a lot of sites and look at other cars all the time. Js seems to be right there with everyone concerning looks, interior, exterior, engine looks, paint, etc. We do a really nice job at making a very good looking car.
Again, once we get a reliable program, not something that will work if needed, but a reliable program, we'll see what we can do. I know you can go with mega-squirt, SMT6, or even just run fuel mods, etc. But they are not and will not be reliable, day in and day out to drive year round...that is my thought at least!
Also, there are a lot of guys on here doing this themselves! So buying extra motors every time you blow one is not an option for most on JBO! Not a lot of rich kids here or parents willing to dump money in to a kids J. The know-how is not as readily available either at your local tuning shop like most other rides are! Total numbers (over 30K here on JBO) doesn't mean we are ALL working towards a 12 second J! Some are, but most aren't I don't think...really, honestly thinking they will build a 12 second J that looks and runs great!
Anyway, long post but guess my point is we do represent well, just don't have really fast cars yet. We need to be able to tune the Ecotec (not sure on the 2.4 as I don't drive one or the 2.2 OHV) and get the full potential from this motor.

Practically every one of my friends disrespects my car and it just pi$$es me off. They can't get past the phrase 'its just a Cavalier.' They just don't seem to understand that once my baby is back on the road all they'll be able to see would be my taillights and my Magnaflows. Its racism and prejudice against cars, thats why people look down on our J's. The rumor that imports are better and faster has spread and no one wants to believe otherwise. I get very angry when someone who doesn't know much about cars laughs at the fact that I'm modding a Cavalier. I go f#@!ing apes@#! when a serious tuner laughs because you'd think they know better. A serious car enthusiast wouldn't hold such prejudice..yet they do. I agree with all of you and all I can really do is laugh to myself that they're such ignorant a$$es.

Now they think my car is fasted than it is. Even Mustangs cower. Go figure.
To me, the answer is easy. All those jabs will have no effect at all.

agreed completely.. any car can have potential, just depends on the owner.. Which the owner is usally most of the problem in the first place. I have heard alot of crap from my friends.. most of the common things: "Why, it's a cavalier?" "Get 2 more cylinders!" "Dude, its a four banger, and a cavalier. you can't win in such a situation"
The one who made teh comment about getting 2 more cylinders own a 97 V6 Mustang, Has a Y-pipe and the Back tires are taller giving it a rake, but yet the tire width actually looks skinnier than my Z24 Tires.. He always urged to race and one day i thought i would and he went around tell everyone that he was gonna race and beat me or w/e so when we got out to the road there was a audience.. i was thinking crap if i lose i won't hear the end of it(cuz he is that kid that will race you, if he wins never let u forget it, but then never race a rematch) Well when i got their he was still talking alot of crap and i had alot of my interior out cuz im redoing it and he told me that wont matter he is still gonna woop me and then tells me to even take out my spare tire and jack.. So when we raced i actually had the take off.. got a nice jump on him and towards the end he would start coming forward but never got passed me before it ended.. Not only was he the one urging the race, he was talking alot of crap, got a crowd to watch "me get beat," then when were done everyone is just like baggin on him and i just kinda smirk at him and then he says it was because my interior was out.. and then someone quoted him saying that he said it wouldnt matter and that shut him up.. havent talked to him really since and i dont bring it up either.. I did get some respect from it i guess but i still get a little talk from friends.. O well, its a underdog.. i like it..
Also i find it funny that they will give me crap about it and then a couple minutes later be crying about gas prices and how they dont have enough money and i just laugh.. not only can i beat some of them but i save more gas then them doing so lol. I've seem to get a lil respect, it seems lately i have seen 4 cavaliers done up poping out of nowhere and im the one to hear about it from friends and it seems like maybe their starting to respect the cavalier..
O and my favorite thing was there were like 8 of us hanging out and they were burning out and were making fun of my car not being able to burn out.. so i pulled up and started burning out and most of them thought it looked awesome and then they said i was cheating by using my ebrake.. but they have to use their brakes.. its the same concept..

Yeah I feel the same way too like all us j's are just crapped on in the tuner world. Same thing happened to me when i got mine my friends laughed at me but when my friends saw me starting to modify the j, they all of a sudden had a change of opionon......And my friend has a ZX5 Focus and has about 5 grand in the motor, here's the sad part, I have a stock ECO, short shifter, AEM cold air, and I can beat him every time....Just goes to show you that us J's are a little more respectable than every one thinks!!!! LOVE THE POST!!!
4 yrs ago I purchased my Z24 Cavalier.
3.5 yrs ago I started asking around local performance shops, body shops ect. with the same responce at ALL of them "Why a Cavalier? Go get something that is wirth while! Like a neon or an eclipse!" So, needless to say about 3 and a half years ago I joined this forum. Then the mods started.
Through this forum I have learned EVERYTHING that I know know about Jbody's..... Thanks EVERYONE!!
There is still an Import shop around here called "Strictly Compact Performance" that tells me that he can me get ANYTHING that I want. But, when I go to his shop and he calles "his" distributers he always comes back with the same responce..... They where clowning on you and told you good luck on finding your parts" So, then I tell him thats ok I already know where I am going to get my stuff and I am sure that I will get it cheaper through my sources anyway"!!! Thanks again to the org.
Now there are about 30 cavaliers and sunfires running around with fart connons as mufflers claiming that they are "moding" there cavalier so they can hang with mine. There is only 1 Jbody in my town that actually knows what he is doing and will actually do more then just add a muffler. You guys know him as "95 Sunfire GT in progress" aka Pimp J!!!
I get so tired of smashing all of the eclipses, neons, V6 mustangs, ect. ect. just because they think they have an import or a little wanna be muscle car so they are better then me. I LOVE to beat them by just a little bit so that they will run and tell there buddies "Damn I almost had that purple cavalier last night"
There was on night I REALLY enjoyed......
I was pulling out of the local WAL-Mart and a 2000 Eclipse acted like he was going to t-bone be in the side (yes, that REALLY pissed me off) I pulled up to the stoplight to make a left hand turn and he sat behind me reving his motor. When the light turned green I turned left as slow as I could without killing the car then when we starightened out in the dual lanes he mashed the gas and jumped out a full car. Then it was on! I, (with me wife in the front, my buddy in the back, and a trunk FULL of junk from Wal-mart) put the pedle to the floor and instantly gained back a half a car. When by the time I was about to shift to third we were dead even and I looked over at his "tricked eclipse" and the guys girlfriend was yelling at him that he had better beat that cavalier or else..... That is all I heard because by then I was hitting third and passing him!!!
I found him later that same night and pulled up to him in a parkin glot to get a quick rundown of his mods and when he got out of the car to talk to me the only thing he got out of his mouth was "Damn, thats a Cavalier?" right after he said that I didn't but have time to nod yes at him and his girlfriend was all over him about he was not to be talking to me. I guess he REALLY messed up loosing to a "cavalier" with THAT woman in his import!!!!!

lol, twice actually, when it first came out and then on Tv at one point(might have watched it 3 times, 2 on TV but caught bits and pieces), the first time i saw the Sunfire on teh lift and the second time i noticed the blue cavalier at the beginning, then just kept a eye out and saw the white one.

Your friends drive some slow ass cars.
There is always someone with a faster car no matter what you have. So just enjoy what you have. Don't take it personally when someone says something about your kind of car, it is just a car, not worth getting upset over. Just because someones car is fast doesn't make them any better than anyone else. I hate someone saying they beat someone, like they did it, when it was there car. If someone tells me they can beat me, I will say come on lets run 5 miles. If they say there car is faster than my car, I will say you are right ,you are wrong, or lets see. I get a kick out having the quickest car for the money, if I have a car and it gets stomped by a car that cost less than mine and is similiar then I might feel a little down. I remember racing a 70 hemi cuda with my 65 GTO 389 3x2bbl when I was stationed in California in the late 70's. He had a rebuilt engine,fiberglass front end, and a new red,, white and blue paint job and was even on the cover of Car Craft magazine that year. He worked at Lockheed and made alot more money than my airman first class pay and his car stomped my car. I had a great time racing him, didn't bother me at all that he won, knew he would. Alot of times I would race small block cars with lopey sounding cams and my smooth running engine would make them think they were going to teach a big block a lesson, but nine times out of ten my car would win. Loved beating corvettes the most.
I have had no respect at all, at the track, until I learned how to drive my car, and became a regular at the track. It wasn't till I started repeatedly winning races at my local track that I got the little respect that I do have. Most v6 mustangs and camaro guys laugh, point, and talk all kind of @!#$, but still will give no respect or even node after they lose the race. Only the old track rats, give me any kind of respect. Most of the time my 15.4-15.6 will win most of the races around here in my class, and that is not even fast. There will never be respect as long as there are only 2-4 cav/sunfires going to the track. The others running 16.5-17.5 most of the time.
