Differences in NVG-T550 and HM282 ASAP
Thursday, February 07, 2008 12:52 PM
I've foung a tranny, owner says it came out of a 92 Z24. It's got brand new seals, clutch, pressure plate, and TOB still in packaging. Guy said I can take it for $150, but I want to make sure it's a NVG and not the 282 tranny. How can I tell the difference by looking at it.

from what i remeber the hm282 is external slave and the nvg t550 is internal.

OK, so if there is no external slave it's an NVG. If it's a 282 where should the slave be on the tranny? Can anyone post pics?

i would think things like this would be common knowledge.

i knew this when i was 18 with my 94 Z24 5 spd.........

but your right, because i am in GM parts, this makes me very arrogant and i believe GM parts are best.

i mean there are a lot of high millage stock Z24's in the top 10 best 1/4 mile times right?

hmmm make one think.

I thought 92-94 trannies were all NVg's. So the 92's were 282?

92 was a crossover year and SOME of the NVGs that year had external slaves aswell..heres how to tell...if the tranny has TWO mounts its the one you want..if it has only ONE mount then its the 282 and you shouldnt use it

I still can't believe nobody caught the big mistake waiting to happen.

92 Z24 = 3.1

Unless he has a 2.2, it won't work.

but it's harder to swap in to my car than the NVG is.

swaping in a HM282, with a 1992 built W41 took me 2 days, and that was taking the motors out of both cars.

i thought it to be OK.

I have no idea what a W41 is, other than an older engine, lol. For the HM282, I'd have to convert to external slave, weld in a new tranny mount, maybe more. With the NVG, it's a direct replacement tranny, which is what I was looking for. If I was willing to weld in new mounts and change some things, I';d use the 00' getrag I have here for sale, but this car is my daily driver for a little while and downtime isn't possible.

...oh ya?

funny i dident have to do any of this. a W41 is a quad-4, 190Hp motor.

its a easy swap, and the hydro lines connect the same way, if you dont want the trans, send it my way.

My tranny has to bolt up to 2 mounts. Also, the Quad 4 engines have a different bolt pattern, so that tranny won't bolt up to my engine as far as I know. Chances are your GTZ already had the external slave. If it's a manual it has to be older than 94. Beretta, beretta, I'm thinking the 5 speed GTZ's were made up to 90 or 91? Z24 has a different botl pattern on the tranny/engine from 95 and up, so that won't bolt to my engine either.

thats why..its a GTZ..its not a 3rd gen J...it worked in YOUR car because the older quad equiped cars came with a "front engine mount" which is actually on the side..also known as the "hockey puck mount"...that mount helps prevent engine roll...the 3rd gen Js do NOT have that mount on the body nor are they able to use it AT ALL..IVE TRIED..if a 3rd gen J uses the 282 getrag with 1 mount that thing will twist around till it snaps..wanna ask me how i know ....
converting to external slave is NOT a big issue at all..nor is the bolt pattern..in fact itll bolt up the same(to a 2.3/2.4..other engines i cant say for sure) ...its the mounts that are the issue..Js have 2 engine and 2 tranny mounts and they need to use all 4 or bad things happen.........did that help expalin alittle better?

Scott..... Chris pulled a Engine/Trans setup from a '92 GTZ, and put it into a '95 Z24....... The trans mount setup on the GTZ was almost identical to the 3rd gen J.

if your registry was filled out, we could tell what you had for a car..... or engine...... or anything!

The GTZ was '90-93/94 with the Quad 4/5 speed. '92+ used the same mount location as the 3rd Gen J. Quad 4's from 88-95 share the same bell housing as the 96-02 Twin Cam 2.4. The 2nd Gen J never came with the Quad, so they ALL use the same trans (except the OHC 1.8/2.0 engines). Those bell housings will work with all 2.0/2.2 OHV engines (from the beginning of time - 2002?).

The 2nd Gen J's didnt use the same trans bracket locations as the 3rd Gen (as far as I can remember..... maybe 93/94 did?)

I have a 97 sunfire with a 2.2 and an isuzu tranny. I think all the 2nd gen J's had the same mounting locations. I'm so confused right now, so I'm just gonna stick to what's plug and play and doesn't make me confused.

the ONLY issues i had were the shift cables, and the rear trans mount, i had to put spacers in for it... no biggy.

everything else bolted up, i used the 95 rear trans mount, and motor mounts, then i used the GTZ frt trans mount.

presto! built W41 in a 95.
