compression ratio for a supercharger

just curious... are people are dropping to a lower compression piston when building for the m62?

I know the turbo guys can run higher boost levels with the lower compression ratio without detonating... just wasn't sure if it would be worth it for the supercharger...

Not needed unless you plan on pushing the m62 to the limits with a way smaller pulley.

i'm just thinking at this point, i could build a motor first for some n/a gains (forged parts but without dropping compression) and then put an m62 on it later.

Some people have discussed upping compression for supercharged apps, but IMO, its better to retain stock compression or slightly lower compression when going with the M62. Reason being, the guys who are maxxing out their M62's are seeing insane intake temperatures, which aren't going to get along so well with increased compression if you intend to run pump gas. Could you get away with higher compression? Probably. You might even be what I'd call "safe" if you were using meth injection with it, but then you have the added complications of the meth kit and having to remember to keep the reservoir full. Plenty of people who are fans of meth injection will tout the decreased intake temps, increased resistance to detonation, etc, but to me, its a band-aid for an improperly matched/overspun compressor. Keep in mind, thats my opinion, so others may not agree, I'm not trying to make it into an argument. But for a street car, and particularly a daily driver, my preferences go with the simplest, safest, easiest to maintain setup possible that attains the power goal desired. Run out of meth on a full throttle run, and BOOM!

So the simple answer to your question would be that I'd recommend stock compression, or 9.5ish:1. Wouldn't hurt to polish the tops of the pistons nice and smooth (unless of course you buy pistons that have already had the tops coated) as well as removing any sharp edges from the combustion chambers also. You can get a lot more power from increasing boost/airflow than by upping the static compression, and also have a much easier time skirting the detonation threshold that way.

reason i always say to keep the compression at or near stock with the s/c , is to help with power when not in boost , since it takes power to drive the s/c , so when the compression is dropped , like someone would for a turbo , the car gets really lazy outta boost , where as a turbo wont get as lazy since they dont eat up any horse power

scarab... i agree. i wouldn't want to run meth on my car. what i'm looking at is building a motor that will hold up well with the m62. but i know it's not something i'll be able to do all at once. i don't really care to stare at a pile of parts in the corner for a long time until i can put everything together for the end result. I do know that over the course of a year, i can pull together enough money to pick up a junkyard eco, forged internals, p&p head, cams, machine work, etc. and get it in the car and running.
