vehicles with a stock garrett T3 Turbo

is there a vehicle that came stock with a Garrett T3 turbo

I believe that the 1985 Volve 740 had one, but was there anything else. i was thinking that i might be able to rebuild one for my turbo setup.

i know i will get the "if your doing a turbo setup it might be better to just buy a new one for it." on scouts honor i will listen intently to your argument, i am just trying to see the entire picture of possibilities.

I don't know why you would want to use a stock one especially from a much older vehicle. You would have to end up rebuilding it and for the price, you might as well buy something brand new and reliable. Also, stock turbochargers tend to be on the smaller side hence not flowing much airflow and easier to pass their point of efficiency.

Spend the money for quality parts.

nissan 300zx (z31) comes with a stock. that is the 84-89 models.

some onther cars come with some decent turbos that you might look at but you need a different flange then garret.

Mitsubishi flange: Run any of the tdoh series 14b [dsm[, 16g [evo], 18g + 20g bigger variations from mitsu trucks overseas

toyota flange: toyota supra mkiii c26 turbo (stock) about the same as some t4 turbos.

if your looking for good power out of the turbo without overworking the compressor then i would personally say get a manifold with a mitsubishi flange and put a 16g turbo on it. that is the turbos off the evo and good up to about 400hp is about $600 plus shipping.

see if i was going to get a used turbo from a yard, i am not really to concerned by the flange. i work with guy who's brother owns a welding shop and he can just manufacture the flange onto the manifold that would need. currently i have them working on a custom strut bar, but we will see if we can actually complete that project.

the turbo thunderbirds (1983-1986) had one style T3, it is a .60 compressor and .48 turbine.

the turbo thunderbirds years 1987-88 had smaller IHI turbo's which were .42 .48. both these

turbo's have T3 flanges, but the 83'-86' T3 is more desirable, and would work well on a 2200.

Other cars w/ the same turbo's are the 80's Mustang SVO's, the Merkur xr4ti, and the Cougar XR7.

The turbo in my sig is an IHI from a 88 thunderbird turbo coupe

Hope this helps!

well if your deadset on a junkyard turbo. a 300zx turbo would prubly fit just right for a mild project. stock boost on the wastegate is 5psi so mild increase for a mild motor.

Supra turbo (mkiii) though would breath enough for a semi-wild project. would outflow the nissan and i believe stock boost is 13psi.

Dsm turbos, 10 psi on the wastegate flow enough for a mild project 16g (evo) will flow enough for a semi-wild project.

dsm turbos are cheap as hell and tend to be beat on, heat up allot on them stock and have coking ane bearing problems, so a junkyard one might not be the best.

nissan turbos stay great forever (pretty much) they boost low, they dont heat up to glowing red (like dsm's) and are a garret t3.

the supra turbo, heats up a little more, bosst higher and flows more. may not be as easy to find a good one as a great condition nissan. but the toyota turbos are huge in comparison.

have fun boosting, its addicting

I am looking for a little boost, something in the range of 6 to 8 psi to start then be able to move up from there. just because it is going to be a little while till i get to doing forge internals and playing with compression ratios.

yeah boost is addicting, since i got the new engine in the cav all i can think about getting a turbo on the engine.

I had an SVO turbo (.60/.63 60-trim AIResearch/Garrett T3) on my car, perfect match for the 2.2L
I also have a couple DSM turbos laying around, way too small, even for the 'lowly' 2200...
If you get a junkyard turbo in decent condition (no bent or chipped fins) you can get a rebuild kit for ~$80, and you have a halfway decent turbo for ~$100.
Pretty much any German car in the yard will have a turbo as well, usually IHI or KKK.

i would stay away from the dodge turbos (old ass turbo motors) the subaru ones, and the nissan ones (other then 300zx)

they are way to small for your application.

when you go to the yard and look for a turbo off a thunderbird, xr4ti or svo, the .48 a/r are on the autos and the .63 a/r are on the manuals. They are a b*tch to get off though, it's easiest to take off the whole exhaust manifold. the turbos off the 87 and 88 tbirds are IHI rather than t3, insanely fast spool up but runs out of breath around 5k.

what about the turbo from a saab 900? there is one of those in the yard that i could grab pretty easily.
