4-12s ?
Thursday, September 11, 2008 6:37 PM
OK SO. im going to be adding 2 more 12s and another amp to my system. Subs are Memphis 15-PR12S4 and the amp is an Alpine MRP-M450.now. before anybody says anything about running 2 amps i WILL eventually be upgrading to some type of amp that does 2K at 1Ohm. anyways. i will need to build a new box ( i will be doing a wall most likely) and i am wondering. should i do a box that is roughly 7 Cubes at 34 HZ or should i build a box that is exactly to the same specs as i have now. and run 2 boxes since i have 2 amps. im thinking i should do the bigger box and just make sure my amps are tuned as close to eacother as possible.

DISCUSS.

Comments and Suggestions are MORE than welcome.

Look into the Isobaric three chamber..."Dual reflex bandpass" (I think thats what its called) Tune your ports... and save some space... piggy back your amps... and bridge your leads. and hit 35Hz... I've only seen this done once in person... getting the correct middle port size is key. Only problem with this is... you wont see your subs... they're mounted inside the box.

good luck!

thanks for the input. but i just want to keep the box ported. im NOT good with bandpass of any kind. haha. and how do i bridge my amps. is that possible with these things

Personally i would say run two seperate boxes untill you get one amp to run them all. I have had i happen where one of the amps shut down and at that point the two running subs are baffled by the two "free floating" ones untill you can sort out the issue with the bad amp. Needless to say you are left with very little output for a while. May not be enough reason to do it that way but just something to consider.

What's wrong with running 2 sub amps? And that box sounds awfully small. Are you going to wall it, or are you going to put them in the trunk?

its gonna be walled. and if you have a better suggestion on box size. right now my 2 12's are in a 4 cube box. you think 8 or 9 cubes would be better for the 4?

heres a couple of pics, it's about 7 cubes right at minimum specs for theses subs, used to have them in a 9-10 cube enclosure and there wasnt any difference in performance switching to this one

i went to a local comp with the old enclosure and a rep from RF was there and said if you had them in a box that was about 2 cubes smaller it would probably produce better numbers, i hit a 148.5 with that box, havent had this one metered yet

when i said there was no diff in performance with this box i meant it sounded the same to the ear but it might show a diff on the meter

your running sealed tho correct???? ima be running ported. and its gonna be sweet haha.

running multiple amps in the same enclosure is really not that hard. you just have to set the gains identical with a multimeter.

yeah. i just got a deal on a MA audio SY7011DX that does 1500 @ 1ohm. altho. im sure its a lil over rated. but ill know if i get it in the morning.

why not just get 2 better 12's? i heard some pr15's and was not impressed at all

then i dont know what you heard em in. cause with mine at 4 cubes there decently loud.

if you wall it go 10 cubes, since you will not be giving the subs the full power they can take, tune it to 32hz. then stand back and watch the flex.

You have no idea what you're talking about do you?

I think you should save up and get a good set of 12's and a bigger amp. One of my 12's has a greater RMS than if you would run four of those.

he would have more cone area though jeff. cone area is harder to over come then power and more looks cooler duh

im still going with 4 of them. its the least expensive way to accomplish wat i want. ijust need to know box size and tuning

8 pr 15's in a wall on 3200rms

loud is all subjective too. Ive heard systems that people claim is the loudest around and it just made me chuckle and walk away knowing my ipod hit harder than that. As long as you are happy thats all that matters

so does anybody have any box suggestions then. instead of bashing on what subs i have. i really just want to know if 8 or 9 cubes will work and a tuning of like 36 or 37 hz???? or what would be the best for THESE subs

Re: 4-12s ?

I did up some rough calculations to the specs you want to hit.

Given:
Hz: 35
Volume: 7 cubic ft
Ohms: 1

In-order to achieve 1OHm
Run 2 subs in parellel @ 4Ohms each sub

In-order to achieve 7 cubic ft box at 35hz
each sub should sit in:
2ft x 2ft x 2ft x 0.5thk
Port at 6" diameter by 5in length.

Tune the amps at the same gain on LP,
Piggy backed RCA's
Bridging each amp
2 subs per amp.

*shrugs... not sure if this is what you're looking for.

You need a much bigger box IMO. I run a single 10" Pioneer Champion series in a 2.25 cube box tuned at 34hz running off of a Rockford Punch 325.1 and it's just about perfect I think. Has no problem moving that much air. I'd go at least 10 cubes with 4 12's...

Not the best setup but it works for my budget.
