Pacesetter Header Diameters and Collector+Pipe
Monday, March 13, 2006 9:01 AM
I am refering to the black 4-1 Pacesetter header for the 2.4L

Everywhere says 1.5" primaries, 3" collector.

Am I correct in assuming all of the downpipes that come new with this are 2.25"?

If the collector is 3" could I just have an exhaust shop make a downpipe that is 2.5" for me as I want a 2.5" setup?

I must've read a million pacestter header threads all asking different questions but none of them this one.

down pipe is 2 1/4"

you can have a 2 1/2" made , they just have to make sure the socket they make to fit with the ball of the header seals

Okay thanks a lot for your help.

Another question - very important as I may have made a mistake -

The 4-1 black pacesetter header for the 95-99 2.4L should fit a 2000 model year Z24 no problem right? I currently have the highest bid on one and I'm pretty sure I'm going to win... then I remember (after getting caught up in out-bidding him, I originally started at $1) that it says 95-99....

any advice?

it depends if its a newer header or a older 1

the 96-98 header has egr , and the 99-02 does not have egr

and on the older version of the header , it had welded o-rings on the gasket side , and would leak if used on the 99-02 , even if used with the stock gasket

on the newer design the flange is flat , and you can use the stock 99-02 gasket and it will seal the egr port up

ive got the newer design 96-98 with egr , on my 00 and im using the stock gasket , and no leaks

Well,
All the 2.4L Pace headers' (5 between painted and ceramic)downpipes I've had inner diameters were less than 2 1/4.
All 701278 or 72C1278.
Not by much though.
But still closer to 2" inner.

The stock downpipe is 2 1/4", and I did exactly the same as you did. If you have a 2.5" made up, then the exh. shop will probably do a little better job than the pacesetter downpipe.
In hindsight, I think I might go with 2 1/4" if I were to do it again. I still have yet to go to the track to see if 2.5" was the right decision.

I don't think he was wondering about the down-pipe...
I think he was asking about the collector opening size...

The part where he asked about the downpipe made me think he was asking about the downpipe.
I don't know, maybe one of us is retarded?

the outlet on the collector should be 2 1/4" , some might be just a hair smaller

and ive measured alot of them

ive never seen 1 any where near 2"

Does this mean I can use the 96-98 with egr, on my 00, with stock gasket, and have it work fine, just as you have done? Seems to be a contradiction in what you said, unless I'm reading incorrectly. I appreciate your help.

In addition... if I am to believe the end of the collector will be 2.25" no matter what, even a 2.5" downpipe would mean there's a 2.25" bottleneck and the .25" difference in air will be just hangin' out there waiting to get through... right? so 2.5" downpipe wouldn't help anyway? nor wood a 2.5" cat-converter and cat-back? Someone help me understand this. The general j-body-guy's knowledge of exhausts seems to vary.

as i said it depends on the version of the header that is on ebay

if the flange has the raised o-rings , you can not use the stock gasket

if the flange is flat , then you can use the stock gasket <<< this is the way mine is

the stock gasket will block the egr port

how ever you can have the egr port welded up also

I'm sorry he is asking about the downpipe but the main part, from what I understand, is that he wants to know how big the collector opening is... and if a 2.5" down-pipe would still work fine...

And I was actually responding to Mastin... not you when I typed that...

So your right one of us may be retarded... but I'm not sure which...

Short hair.
Was 2.15"

the collector on my 2.2L was definately bigger than 2.5". Not sure for the 2.4, but I don't believe it would be a restriction for a 2.5" downpipe. The pacesetter downpipe is 2.25" outside diameter, not inside diameter.

The collectors on the pacesetter headers is a 3" collector that has a conical seat that reduces the outlet ro 2.25". You can easily open it up to 2.5" like I did.
In hindsight, though, I think I may have been better off going with 2.25" exhaust all the way back.
I don't know how power was affected because I only drove my car for one day wih the stock exh.

id leave the hole at the 2 1/4" , there isnt alot of material left in the collector when the header and down pipe move

also have the smaller hole in the collector , the exhaust flow will speed up going through it , the curve inside the header is smooth and wont hurt the flow , like a flat wall would

There is a ton of material in there, and opeining it up to the ID of the 2.5" tubing is insignifigant. The design of the collector, with the ball end is terrible for flow. A straight tapered collector would have been much better.

I had a custom 2.5" down pipe made for my pacesetter. They did and excellent job doing it and did 2.5" all the way to the exhaust.
